Pre-purchase advice

I'm a new member who is about to take the plunge and buy an l322.

I've had Discoverys for a few years and experienced most of the land Rover owner nightmares.

My main question is; Given that I do approx 180 to 200 miles a week (90% of which is at 50 to 60 mph and the rest is town driving) would there be a huge issue in going for a v8 rather than a td6 re the MPG? The only real m/way driving I do are 3 or 4 trips to Kendal every year from Perthshire in Scotland.

I've seen a 2002 v8 Vogue, which is fairly local, going for £9995 with 45k on the clock. Prices for FFRRs seem to be much higher up here than down in England and the td6s with comparable (if not higher) prices are usually over the 100k mark.

Basically I'm just wondering if there would really be any financial advantage in going for the td6.

Anyone do comparable milage in a v8 and possible comparisons from a td6 owner?

Hello rlv & welcome. I run a TD6 with approx 113k miles on the clock. When it's running ok, I average 1-200 miles per week, mixed between town & country. If on a run 30 mpg easy to get if your not mental, if I reduce speed to 60-65 then 33 mpg easily acheived but makes for a fecking long journey, around town , don't expect much.Hope this helps.

Thanks Mr Tee.

Just one question - "when it's running ok" - is that unusual then? HaHa.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago and went for the V8 as I figured that I don't do that many miles in a year and petrol is cheaper than diesel at the moment so I can have the fun of a V8 without too much pain.

I managed to get an 03 Vogue with 76K on the clock for £8500 from Dundee, but that was after missing several others as the low milage V8's do seem to sell quite quick.

On the run up to Inverness from Dundeen the computer was telling me I was getting 27 mpg, at a steady 60mph. Driving here on the island it's saying 19mpg but I've only done one fill since I got it so I've not had chance to check the figures for myself.

The one you're looking at, that's not the black one at Ellon, near Aberdeen is it?

Yes, that's the one Budgie.

That mpg to Inverness is quite encouraging.

The computer may have been a bit enthusiastic, I'm not sure. Wink

I phoned about the black one a couple of times. The dealer said that it's needs a new nearside rear light unit and some "cosmetic" damage repairing on the rear bumper, but apart from that it's a clean car.
I just thought it strange that he was waiting for someone to buy the car before he would do the work on the rear bumper & light. It has to be done so why try selling it with rear end damage?? Rolling Eyes

He also only offered £300 off the price for a cash sale with no trade-in, so I didn't get around to looking at it.

Saying all that, it's been on the market another 4 to 5 weeks since I last spoke to him so things may have changed and he may be more open to an offer. Thumbs Up

The car runs great, it's getting it started that's the current problem ( among many)
At the end of the day it's a 10 year old car that maybe isn't worth that much second hand , but still requires the maintenance of a £55 k motor. It's all relative I suppose.could always get a skoda superb, would be much more reliable, but would it be better.......... Question

That's the place.
I have to admit that the guy was up front about it and said the repairs would be done before the car was sold but I was looking for something I could view, buy & drive away. That's why I didn't bother going to look at it, it's not cheap making two trips to Aberdeen from Stornoway. Wink

From the photos it does look like a nice clean Rangie and with only 45k on the clock it should have sold long before now. All the other V8's of the same age & price range sold within days of being advertised and they all had higher mileage, I know cos I missed them all! Laughing
