Steering Wheel Upgrade

Having seen Joshdee's upgraded steering wheel yesterday, I'm thinking this would be a nice upgrade to my 2003 car.

I'm not that fussy about the satin chrome spokes, but when looking on the bay, steering wheel prices go from about £107 to £300 odd silly money.

Some are the grained leather, which may be from 2008 cars, and some are the smooth leather from 2009 onwards ?

I'm just wanting a plain soft leather one, ie not with walnut wood or the super grippy thumb rests and stuff.

Has anyone else done the mod ?

The smooth finish leather seems to be getting on for twice the price as the grained finished ones.

I take it the ones where you have to send your wheel back in exchange will not be genuine Land Rover items ?

Is the rim bigger on these wheels, as the rim on mine seems thinner. Not talking about the wheel diameter, but the bit where you'd wrap your thumb round when driving.

What do you guys recommend ?

Thanks

We do these most weeks... The smoother leather is commonly known as "nappa leather" and yes your right is for the newer cars but fit all ages of FF... The exchange wheels usually mean they are re-covered core units, meaning the inner workings and crash ability is still Land Rover (IMHO very important) as you don't want a crash and to snap a sub standard steering wheel rim (at best rendering it un-usable, at worse causing you damage in an accident!)

How bad is your steering wheel? If budget is an option and your wheel is battered, we have lots of pre used low mileage wheels... Priced at £100

Craig Thumbs Up

Thanks Stan. Normally a massive advocate of the search, thought I'd quickly post up my query before dashing out the door......

Cheers Craig.

Sounds interesting. I would rather have a wheel thats not been recovered, but obviously pukka Land Rover units, as you say.

Do you have heated ones in the smooth nappa leather, with the chrome spokes ?

Assume you won't need my wheel in exchange ?

My wheel is not bad, but a bit shiny.

After seeing one on another members car yesterday, it looked like a decent upgrade.

Would I need the airbag removal tool ?

Thanks

I upgraded mine to the nappa leather chrome heated wheel. Genuine. I then sold my old one on and got a few bob, so
I was never without a steering wheel.

I used a clothes horse wire to remove the air bag. A clothes hanger might do it also.

IMHO defo worth the upgrade. It feels lovely to drive wit the smooth Leather and the dirt doesn't get stuck in grain.

I got mine on eBay. Think around 200 if I remember. Thumbs Up

With you now Craig. My wheel isn't that bad, had I not seen the upgraded one, it'd not have entered my head to change it.

That seems a good price Lolo. I shall have to keep an eye out. I can get a new genuine grained leather one with the silver covers on for about £140 odd, but in my heart of hearts, I really want the smooth nappa leather, and as you say, dirt won't be such an issue.

Did you have the grained one before ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

The nappa one also has a thicker rim and is much nicer to hold.

Very definitely worth the upgrade! Si. <This is my name.

Thanks all.

I may have sourced an original nappa one, but it says it may come with the command shift paddles.

I don't want these (and they obviously won't work).

Does anyone know if you can take them off, or do you have to buy new covers and such ?

May be best to contact the seller.........

Just ordered a soft nappa leather genuine new one from DCC 4x4.

Should be with me for Thursday..........

Looks like if it has the paddles on, I can remove and use the backs from my original wheel.....

Hoping it doesn't take me hours to get the airbag off..........

I'll let you know how I get on.

Yep it can be tricky if the wire is not aligned correctly.ur basically pushing a tab inwards, if u have a led torch u can look in and see the tab ur supposed to be pushing. Keep at it u will get it eventually. Thumbs Up

When I upgraded the steering wheel on my old car I was sent a "tool" to remove the airbag. Basically it's a small screw driver with the head cut off Shocked

Works a treat though Thumbs Up so if you have a spare screw driver and a hacksaw lying around you'll be fine Whistle

Mine was heated, 06my. 'twas plug and play BUT one connection was v slightly different but sorted it by cutting off a bit of the plastic . Now the wheel heats up lovely and evenly.
