gear box problem

Morning all, went in the car yesterday and stopped at lights out of gear lights changed into gear nothing, frans fail came up on dash, after a min it started to move but very slowly as if the clutch was slipping, any way got about half a mile and stopped all together, no drive/clutch slipping.had to get recovery out for it. So am waiting for the verdict now. Anybody got a idea what it could be or am i looking at something very expensive. Cheers Henry.

Morning Henry
When it came up with Trans Fail Safe the gearbox has gone into limp home mode so it sets of in 3rd gear. Did you try to move in reverse? If you had reverse and no drive it probably the multiplate clutches in the box and it will need an overhaul. The same verdict can be reach if you have drive again now that it is cold as the clutches tend to slip when they are hot.
