MacBook pro. Update

My son is driving me nuts about buying him a MacBook pro.. They seem a lot of money for what they do. Does anyone know where I can get one at a not too crazy price? Previously..

If you don't want to pay full price (less the ~5% education discount, maybe more, you can get if your son is in full time educ) it's likely going to have to be a 2nd hand unit - Apple don't do discounts either direct or through 3rd parties like Comet/Currys/John Lewis.

MacBooks are expensive, iMacs, (IMHO) aren't and are good value.

We're a Mac household, 2 MacBooks and 3 iMacs plus iphones, ipads and ipods - best thing is they all work together, without interference, all of the time and not had a single failure yet. 2012 FFRR Westminster Orkney / Ivory and absolutely no pimp-glass!

I'd just get a decent dell Inspiron or latitude as much better value for money Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

We have a few mac products, pads, pods, phones and apple tv... All really good.. But I cant justify 1k on a MacBook.
I agree a good laptop is much better value, but he says his course is more suited to a mac. The education discount is a joke.
I would ram raid pc world but the macs are not close enough to the windows! Previously..

You could buy a Mac Book Air, I've used mine every day for over a year now, never crashed, stopped working, even dropped it from a height and continued to work. Current MY2020

I think you get a better spec of pro for the same money. I think with Airs you are paying for the thinness.
Can someone give me an opinion on this please..

It seems like a good deal. I'm sure my son would have it in grade b condition soon enough anyway Laughing Previously..

Great value if it sold for (or you got it for...!) £571. A new one is £939 at education prices, or currently Apple have refurb Airs at £789

If he wants a Mac, don't get him a Windows machine... no matter how cheap. Graham

Think I was quite lucky, right time right place etc. They had 16 for sale, now all gone, I genuinely got the last one. Yes, I saw the apple refurbs and I might have gone that route if it were not for stumbling upon this on eBay. As I say, 7 day return and 6 month warranty should stop me worrying I might have bought a piece of junk!
Cheers,
Archie. Previously..

I reckon you could easily sell it for that on eBay if it doesn't suit. Graham

Get more ram in it ASAP at Lear another 4gb and swap the hdd out for a ssd at least 240gig in size and stick the current disk in a caddy to use as external storage. It's the older sandy bridge setup but still usable. How can a course be geared toward using a mac?!? Is that not elitist?? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Ive held off going down the mac route for years ... however the wife brought a macbook air home from work and I have to say, its brilliant. the trackpad and way to scroll about pages is so intuitive.

Seriously considering the jump this year. Just waiting to see what is announced over the new few weeks. V8 or else ...

Well, it arrived this afternoon. We have thoroughly checked it and it actually looks brand new. There is no visible mark on any surface. At £571 it is £400 cheaper than buying from Apple. So, I am happy at saving money and my son is delighted that it looks new. Previously..
