Active Exhaust , i want one

I was in my local supermarket and as always I sit in the car until its time to pack and pay, any way in comes a RR with polish plates, a bit blinged up for my liking but a clean looking car, as he walks past my car he takes a very interesting look at my halo conversion and seeing me in the car starts to talk to me, he wanted to know where I bought them but when I told him I made them he was asking loads of questions, right to the point, he starts telling me what he has done to his car, mainly engine mods, it was a td6 and he had messed with the turbo and breather system and went on to say it would leave a S/C standing, when he started it there was no difference in the sound until he flicked a switch and then the exhaust turned in to a deep burble, it sounded great when he revved it, flicked the switch and it was back to standard,
At this point his mate came back and he was on his way but not be for doing a length of the car park in sports mode as he called it, let me tell you that thing flew of the mark... I didn’t get a chance to find out just how much of the exhaust he had change so has any one come across this system. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

TD6 on the GM box outperforming an S/C? Sound is one thing, but longevity of the weak box with an overtuned engine unit .... nope. It can't cope with the standard tune unit!

Secondly, a 4.4TDV8 can't out perform an S/C - it can get close, but it's not there yet.

So...I'd have to say it sounds like a boy racer setup.

Oh and exhaust mods - they don't give THAT much of a boost. Land Rover Addict

i would agree to the boy racer part 100%, It was a pre touch screen and had a few engine mods as he was pointing here and there but i cant say if he could beat a S/C or not but it did fly, left a cloud of black smoke and it was gone, i would love to know what exhaust system it was.. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

The black smoke is over-fuelling and can be very bad for high exhaust gas temperatures.

It's also the sign of a poorly tuned engine. In other words, the fuelling's been increased and little else done.

Sure, it'll go, but it'll also break if not done properly.

The exhaust? Probably de-catted / derestricted. His engine will respond far better and the noise will improve. The turbo takes out most of the turbulence in the system anyway. Si. <This is my name.

I think it's an American muscle car thing, have seen a couple of vids on YouTube.
I think they call them 'Cut Outs'.
It's an electrically operated solenoid which operates a type of butterfly valve in the exhaust system near or before the centre silencer. This opens the exhaust system to atmosphere after the cat but prior to the silencers, hence the noise change on a button press.
Pretty sure the Jag XK R has a similar system, but in the exhaust back box.
Search YT for 'cutouts'
Had it, loved it!

^^^ Used to have them when I was a lad about 5000 years ago. Only difference was they were operated by a pull wire from inside the car. I like the idea of an electric one, not sure my MOT tester would though

steve they must be the things he had, now i know they sound a bit boy racer but all i can say is that his car sounded like an aston, i would like something like that and rig it up to the sports mode switch so when sports mode is selected i can have a bit of fun, better start looking for an old back box to mod, there are quite a few cars that have them as well as some bikes..i fill a mod coming on Laughing V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.
