dash battery light and a possible alternator failure?

new Bosch S5 fiited last week.
car would not start today Evil or Very Mad
did start to hear a whining noise last week as well forn the serpentine area.
753 screen shows 13-12.5v battery charge.. less if things are switched on

if the alternator was failing would the dash battery indicator light up? as there is no warning on the dash..

Was the engine running when the light was on?

thanks for the quick reply..
apologies..
what i meant to convey was that there is no warning light in the dash at all. prior to or after the car failing to start.
i thought that if the alternator was failing that the light should come on ..kind of to give you a warning of an impending issue!!!
but no, there is no dash warning light with the engine on or of. 2011 4.4 TdV8 Nara Bronze

charging should show 14.5'ish volts when on idle , if it does not them the alternator/belt might need replacing.. ... - .- -.

If the car isn't running 12.5-13V is battery voltage and is ok, tends to suggest the alternator was charging ok last time you used the car.
If the car won't start are you sure you haven't got a bad connection on one of the battery terminals?

12.5-13v is with the engine running..
car is used daily. 20-30 town miles..
could the whining be a coincedence?
terminals look fine, no corrosion , no loose wires.
i want to take it to the garage for them to test the alternator....but the car wont start...... Censored
another jump start ... 2011 4.4 TdV8 Nara Bronze

I assumed when you couldn't get the car started the voltages were with the engine off. Wrong again Smile
12.5 to 13V with the engine running is not good, again could be a bad connection but definitely more likely alternator connected problem.
The whine you could hear is almost certainly a current discharge back thro the alternator when the engine is off. Imo you could be heading for an alternator failure. The warning light on the dash will not be on yet but soon could be.
As you indicated I would have the alternator tested.

The cost of the alternator seems ok, the labour seems a bit ott but the only alternatives are an independent or an auto electrician.

Replacement alternator on my TDV8 cost me £750 in April. Mega Ouch.

Light did come on the dashboard and the 753 screen showed it charging at anything from 11-16v. Discovery 4 HSE
