GEARBOX BEHAVIOUR

2004(04) L322 V8 4.4 petrol auto. Hi all, just joined the forum yesterday, so please forgive any duplications! In June this year I experienced some gearbox problems, where intermittantly it downshifted to 2nd gear and I regularly had to park it, shut off and let itself re-boot. Had it looked at whilst away on hols and repairer reported that once drained and sump removed, valve block removed and cleaned and refilled with the correct amount of oil, having noted that it only had half the required amount in previously. With one single occasion repeated since, it has not done it again. the cars computer has often displayed 'transfer box fault' or high range only, but again, with one exception where I stopped, read the handbook and rectified the reading, this has just gone away again. My problem currently is this, and I think it is connected to the preceding explanation; I experience low speed/low revs so called 'cattle grid judder' (circa 25 - 35mph / 1500 - 2000rpm, engine revs 'hunt' at steady 40 - 50mph in high gear - 1500 - 2000rpm, and behaves as though it doesnt know what gear to be in. I drive within the prevailing speed limits to maintain economy (and not attract Plod) but if I choose to, or need to accelerate sharply, this I can easily do and not experience any of these problems, even the judder.
Had the re-mapping engineer check it (re-mapped 18 months ago to give additional 40hp) and his plug in computer told him of three of four transmission based faults - he explained these could be historical, and that he was an engine man, not a gearbox man. I have a diagnostic appointment with a transmission specialist on Thursday this week, for them to plug it in, take it for an extensive drive and discussion afterwards. Hoping you can give me some advice before I see them - I am no engineer, but, give me a Mk 2 Lotus Cortina and I could take that apart and rebuild it - technology left me behind 30 years ago! Please help if you can. I'm pretty sure the gearbox is a ZF 5speed Confused

i would say its the TQ, whats the mileage, if you drive it very light on the throttle you should fill the judder around the said speed, its the TQ trying to lock up.not what you want to here Sad
what was your remap like..did you notice a big difference V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Mileage is 98000 glorious miles, I've done the last 40000 since owning her in August '10. I can't say I notice the extra horses but when I need them she really takes off - makes a really good rasp now too as I had a stainless, polished sports exhaust made for her in May this year. Now driving with the window open with a smile! Gearbox worrying though, need deep pockets!

Looks like you have explained the same symptoms as my RR.
What was the outcome? Should i get something replaced, cleaned or what?

Thanks FFRR 2003 Vogue V8

Dave was spot on with mine a few years back.

Torque converter replaced before it totally breaks up and ruins the whole box.

Flushing won't help.
