FBH stopped working

Hi,first post on here but been with you since I purchased my 55reg ( facelift) in July.Love the beast and since I've had it I have fitted the digital tv upgrade and the iPhone module upgrade, after reading up on this Forum.Problem is, I've just fitted a lovely new leather steering wheel from Powerful but now the FBH doesn't work ?.you have to disconnect the battery to do this and the job is easy but the heater won't switch on using either the (2) remotes or the touchscreen timer. It was freezing last night so no problem with temperature ?Any ideas. Its a TD6

Just a thought... If the battery voltage was below a threshold, it might not switch on the FBH. I take it car starts first crank? Have you checked the relevant fuse? Maybe disconnect battery again. Previously..

Have a good search on here there is a lot on the fbh, they seem to be a bit temperamental.

Basically you should hear.

1. Slow fuel pump click to start with as the heater primes
2. Faster fuel pump click as the heater ignites
3. Burner fan kicks in.
4. feel hot flue gasses under car by front passenger wheel.
5. Signal sent to divert hot water to the heater matrix.

Dont confuse the ventillation fans with the fbh when listening, they will run at the start.
You are listening around the front passenger wheel arch area.

See where yours gets up to..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Sounds like the glow plug might have gone. If it doesn't ignite within about 15 seconds it shuts off. That's what mine was doing. Easy fix once you get to it. Access is the biggest problem.

Does the exhaust get hot? (FBH exhaust, not the car) - I suspect it doesn't, in which case it isn't actually igniting the burner. The vast majority of ignition failures are caused by a duff glow plug.

Sequence to listen for is ticking of fuel pump, fans coming on and then a lowish whistle sound. If you don't get that sequence it should tell you which bit is not working from the missing item.

Good luck.

Yes, read up all the posts I could find before I purchased 2 T91s and programmed them to the car by removing rear unit plug, as I said, was working perfectly before fitting/disconnecting battery, now, by the wheel arch you here the low whine for 15/20 secs then nothing.

Yep, that sounds broken. Could be the glow plug, do you hear the ticking from the rear of the car, indicating the fuel pump is running, as if not it may point to a faulty pump. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That sounds like what mine was doing, check its going through the correct pre ignition sequence, fuel pump ticking etc.

failing that it could be one of several things, there is quite a lot of info on all of them and im no expert, however, there are several things which seem to go wrong,

Glow plug, ECU, blocked FBH water pump and the water control valve.

If it was working fine the other day it may be worth checking all of the connections to the unit, to the water valve etc, it can be accessed by removing the wheel arch liner on the passenger side, which is do-able with the wheel on in off road height., whilst it is accessable the pump can be checked by clamping off the hoses and disconnecting them from the unit.

If the ECU on the unit has gone kaput then there is someone (seen it in a thread on here) who will recon the edu. As far as the water control valve goes, this diverts the water to the heater matrix and is a PITA to get to as it is behind the engine on the outside of the cabin bulkhead.

When i had mine fixed under warranty last week they replaced the entire unit, though i suspect that the ecu was the part which had failed, it had similar symptoms to yours, seemed to fire up but cold car 20 mins later. If you are reasonable with spanners then the FBH can be removed and cleaned, new glow plug fitted etc off the car, i have got as far as checking the pump and wiring, but it looked fairly simple if a little fiddly in places to remove.

These are pretty much all of the parts involved in making it work..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
