Upper tailgate struts

Top tailgate seems to come down heavily. I was wondering if this is normal or whether the struts have started to go/gone.

Mine is very dampened but I believe there were some adjustments from 10MY onwards. However, I don't think it should come down that heavy on any car for safety reasons!

tailgate struts failure (again)

during this cold weather, mine seem to slip allowing the tailgate to come down slowly on my head, but not at normal temps! What are the struts filled with, can it be re-filled or does one have to replace the whole strut(s)?
