My Babies

Thought I would get a quick snap of my babies side by side. The SL looks tiny next door to the FF....... Unfortunatley, the SL was my 'reliable' car last night when the Rangie would not start. The SL was first turn after 4months of no use at all.

The LR Assistance guy told me the new L405 can have upto 120 control units on a full spec one !!!!!!!...... Can imagine a few flat batteries on those.

Yes, I normally avoid red cars as the roofs, bonnets and boots always seem to go pink as the paint oxidieses, but that one looks immaculate.

Has it been resprayed?

Hi,

It has been sprayed, but about 10 years ago well before I bought it. In fact, over the winter it will be having a bare metal spray and a couple of front wings (the existing ones are after market and not the best fit)

I have owned it for 4 years and I got it 'cheap'........ I looked at the list of what could go wrong the day after I bought it....... I had the full set ! Shocked

Its now worth about what it has cost and it is one of the few totally inoffensive cars I have ever owned. You are let out at pretty much every junction. A lovely lazy v8

We did a round trip of Scotland a couple of years ago as my dad lives in Dunnet which is as far as you can go before you get wet.

When they used to build Mercs properly as well.

Many decades ago my Mothers boss had the one before that, where the headlights are more vertical, and I used to go in that when I was about 6 years old.

What a classy car.

You mean a Pagoda...lovely cars, hugely expensive for a good one now though.

Love the R107's, an SL500 is on my shopping list this year...great pair of cars you have there!

In the mid 80's I used to live near James Hunt in Wimbledon. I recognised his house because there was an article in Autocar about his cars. He was mad for Mercs. He had a couple of 450 SEL 6.9's and then in addition a 560SEC and a 560SEL. And also an elderly Austin van.

Then he was going through a divorce and all the Merc's went apart from one of the 6.9's, and that was on bricks.

I saw him a few times but never met him. Real shame about him dying and he was an entertaining character.

I would have loved, and prefered, a Pagoda, but money aside, the later model was much more turnkey based upon my limited mechanical skills.

My dad had a pagoda, 280sl, it's the only car I have ever crashed!!
Folks were on a business trip and he left the car at home for safe keeping. Someone had previously stolen a headlight from it at the airport, so it would not be left there again.
I found the keys for it. I was giving friends a blast in it up and down our drive. I lost control of it when I pressed the throttle too hard and it hit kickdown. I hit a tree. I then spun it up to the axle trying to reverse it out.
That was the worst week ever, waiting for them to come home. I was 15 !! Previously..
