4.4 V8 rocker cover gaskets

Today gave the car a service and changed the rocker cover gaskets. I've had a slight oil leak slowly getting worse so now I had a dry day set about doing it.

1. Put the bonnet into access mode. How to in the wiki. (I didn't do this at first but should have)
2. Remove the acoustic cover. 4alen bolts 1/4 turn
3. Lift off the weather seal running across the front of the scuttle, then undo the 2 14mm nuts and pull the air filter ousting towards the front of the car. It's quite heavy at full stretch. You should now have enough room and be able to see the 2 inlets to the HVAC system.
4. Use a flat head screwdriver and pop off the 2 finishing cover on the R/H cover.
5. Use a 10mm socket and remove/undo the 2 bolts. And lift off the finishing cover.

You now have the coil packs exposed and can see all the nuts holing the rocker in place.
It should look something like this:

6. NOT ESSENTIAL BUT FOUND IT HELPED. Above the coil packs and connectors is a black box about 12" long. Using a flat head slowly and carefully pop off this cover. Once removed you will see all the wires for the coils.
7. Use a 10mm socket and undo the 2 nuts holding each coil pack inplace. The connector is removed by sliding the silver reader towards the floor. It's like a cam lock. I placed the finishing cover in the boot and placed each coil pack in the correct position on top of the finisher removed in step 5. I'm not sure if this is req but figured it best to put it back where it came from.

It should now look like this:

8. Use a 10mm socket to undo the 11 nuts holding the rocker in place. The front 3 are long and probably won't be removed fully. The other 8 should have a washer. Mine were all stuck to the rubber seals. A flat head screwdriver helped remove them. Also at the top rear is the vent for the PCV system. Just a jubilee clip to undo and remove the pipe.
9. I tucked the 4 coil connectors into the box to help keep them safe.
10. How the hard bit. (Not hard but time consuming and fiddly). Pull the rocker cover off. You will get snagged on the fuel line and by the heater matrix blend motor. Be carefull and slow and you will get it off.

You should now look like this:

I then used a rag to clean the machined faces on the heads. There will be sealant at the rear where the 2 half semi circles on the gaskets sit ans also at the front on the top and bottom where the front cover on the engine meets the block. I then used a rag and cleaned the inside of the rocker cover.

Now the new gaskets sit in a groove on the rocker cover. RAVE says to use a sealant on the 2 semi circle bits at the rear and where the 2 joins are at the front. I put this on the machined aces instead of the cover to save the mess.

Now replace the cover with new gaskets and tighten up working from the centre out. Replace as reverse of above.

The nut seals had also leaked into the coil pack/spark plug area. The old ones were rock hard so were causing more trouble than good. They could be replaced on thier own if the gaskets were ok. Mine looked like this:

I should have taken a photo of the new ones but forgot.

The drivers side is exactly the same but is quite a bit harder as the dip stick and the AC pipe work get in the way. It's possible but I had to use quite a few more swear words and also I bit more force. I removed the inlet ducting to give me more space, this isn't essential but well worth the effort. If both need doing I would recommend using the PAX side as a practice run. On the drivers side I tried pitting the gasket on the machined face then fitting the cam cover. BIG mistake, I just added extra problems.

I did discover that the leak is usually at the bottom face as the oil sits on the lip and ver time will weep past the gasket. Down side of a 45deg V8.

Took me a total of about 4 1/2 hours to do both sides and do a service while doing it.

I will add the part numbers and quantity's tomorrow unless Dan can get in there first.

The gaskets were £20+vat per side and the nut seals were £1.19+vat (16 required. 8 per side)

I just had the passenger rocker cover gasket replaced on my range rover 4.4 petrol LPG by a local garage at a cost of £200.

Though it was a bit steep. He said it took 4.75 hours work.

Well Rob says it took him 4.5 hours to do both sides, and that included a service!

Having read his instructions, it doesn't appear that difficult a job and should take no more than 2 hours just to do the passenger side gasket (he says it will take longer on the driver's side due to limited accessibility). So £200 to do only one does seem a little pricey! Say they charge £40 for materials, that still leaves £160 for labour = £40 an hour? That's probably about right for an hourly rate, but it appears they have taken a lot longer than they should - assuming they did of course take the 4.75 hours they told you Cheers
