So I have been persuaded to cycle from Fort William to Inverness, that's fine but staying in hostels - that's not me. Any other options that you good people on here are aware of? Geoff

A82 is a downright scary road Shocked but is alright if the weather is decent. If you've never been up in this neck of the woods, be warned the midges are unlike anything else you may have experienced, you have been warned Whistle However the scenery will knock you bandy. There are plenty of nice B&Bs en route, Invermorriston is a nice stopping off point for food or accommodation. what time of year are you planning to do the route?
I'm up that way for work tomorrow & the weather up here is beautiful just now, yippee. Thumbs Up The reason women's minds are cleaner than a mans mind is that women change their minds more often!
When women say fine a mans in deep doodoo as fine has so many meanings.

Thanks,
I'll be Mountain Biking along the towpath of the Caledonian canal and then on the Great Glen Way and will use a bit if forest track and the old Great Glen Cycleway (no longer maintained) not the A82.
Currently I'm booked in hostels but interested in B&B/Hotel alternatives in the following places South Laggan, East Lewiston, Inverness and Fort Augustus.
By the way it will be mid June - so I don't know if the midges are about then.
Thumbs Up Geoff

Have a look at www.sawdays.co.uk and you will find very nice B&B's.... may or may not be on your route, but loads in that area of Scotland so worth a look. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

^ for sure..
They really stop me from outdoor activities in the west nowadays. I am like a magnet for them. We were at fort William for the downhill world championships. Standing at the side of the track up the hill was a nightmare, I was being eaten alive. Previously..

Total nightmare in the summer.. I remember being at Lochgoilhead a few years ago and it had been raining but really muggy I don't think I've ever seen so many midges in my life. We met up with 2 french tourists who were hoping to tour all over Scotland but couldn't cope with it and were making there way back down South as quickly as possible....ruins so many west coast holidays. Big Cry

I have used Avon skin so soft and it does help a bit Thumbs Up

Agree with Jim. Skin So Soft is the best stuff available. Thumbs Up

We also have a friend who owns a croft on Skye who swears by the stuff. The midges there when we visited were like little piranhas. Si. <This is my name.
