I have no idea to be honest but if you watch Wheeler Dealers the other week Mike Brewer had that issue with a Porsche Boxster and an oil change of the gearbox resolved it. |

That certainly is strange. In first gear the coast and forward clutches are engaged and the only difference between ‘D’ and ‘Manual’ is that in manual mode the Low/Reverse clutch is additionally applied to bypass the low clutch sprag. The implication therefore is that something has happened to your low clutch sprag, causing it to work intermittently, but it’s hard to see how a rear-end shunt could have caused that?

Holy moly that is a lot of energy to be dissipated. I would talk to the insurance company and claim a new gearbox because that is likely to have done serious damage to it. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Yeah there is a lengthy insurance saga going on... They want to write it off but there's no way that's happening! I'd rather fix something than replace it... We'll investigate and find the cause but it's always nice to hear if someone has BTDT... |

Great to know the RR is that solid. Although for energy absorption it is not that great apparently. Still the Corolla crumple zones did a lot of absorbing I guess |

Looks like we found the cause, a failed Sprag bearing.
