Alternator Gremlins

Hi guys, been away for a while so apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, cant be bothered to read two years of unread topics. Had what I thought was the dreaded battery drain, and on and off over the years have had intermittent early morning flat batteries, a new battery sorted it first time, this time however it died almost immediately. I was told by recovery that the alternator was producing plenty of amps but no volts. It sounds strange to me, can it be right, anyone know of this? Is it a new alternator, which I guess is expensive and difficult to get at. No body told me there would be days like these

afaik you cant have amps without volts, you can the other way round...stick a multimeter on the battery at idle and you should get around 14.5 volts .. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan, I was not convinced, but we are all scratching our heads as to whats going on, as for months its fine, then it fails to start. Will try to get it looked at over the weekend, but any thoughts, ideas and additional info may save me getting mugged at the garage. No body told me there would be days like these

on top of testing the voltage output of the alternator, i would look into how long you've had the battery and also inspect the battery connections to make sure they are tight... ... - .- -.

Final Stage Resistor seems a common fault leading to flat batteries.... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

I have a Battery Brain fitted which cuts out the battery when the voltage drops below 11.7V, so the car is (almost) guaranteed to start.

Mine is in the garage to be stripped down at the moment for alternator investigation/replacement. Will let you know of any conclusions. No body told me there would be days like these
