I was going to take SWMBO on a River Cruise but they seem expensive for what they are and I have left it too late for Summer 2013. So my question is has anyone just put their FFRR on a Ferry or Le Shuttle (North Sea or Channel) driving to and stopping in nice places with nice hotels (only the best for SWMBO not tents or caravans) Geoff

I've done the reverse - from Europe to the UK. It was a shopping trip with the trailer though.

Been to Prague in it also.

Great way to travel, and there are some nice hotels around that aren't shockingly expensive.

Easy Peasy just do it....

My advice is to head for the Lakes & Mountains. In Switzerland we go to Locarno on Lake Maggiore and Davos in the Mountains. In Austria we go to Zell am See/Kaprun, Ehrwald/Lemoos & Kitzbuhel and in Germany Garmisch Parten-Kirschen. All fab places with fab hotels & B&B.

here's a suggestion of something i'm planning to do [one day]

drive down to ashford and stay in one of the many premier inns/travelodges
10 minute drive next day to the shuttle
go on the coach train so you get plenty of room for your range
take a leisurely drive towards the french alps and stop roughly halfway [4 hrs /Reims ?]
drive next day to french alps where you have a ski chalet booked..summer temperatures stay around 30 degrees and the air is fresh.. ... - .- -.

4 hours driving - that is a leisurely day

I'm usually more about the destination than the journey..... For skiing, we leave leave home after lunch and run down as far as Lyon - then up into the mountains first thing in the morning. On the way back, we'll ski/board all day, then get to Reims for an overnight stop on the way home.

In the summer, we're usually between Bordeaux & Bayonne - we do that in 1 go - 750 miles plus the tunnel and fuel stops.

Tunnel is the way to go - you can just about squeeze into regular height with the suspension on the low setting, but if you just tick the roofbox option, you end up in overweight - it's the same cost, just less availability.

If you're going to do much driving in France during peak periods, then it's worth getting a transponder for the toll roads - the queues at some toll booths can be long, but the dedicated telepeage lanes are usually short to none existent.

I got mine from APRR - it was something like 20 euros - the tolls are the same plus 2 euros for any month you use it - billed directly to your UK credit card

My wife is not a great fan of road trips the way I like them (driving for hours) so we are limited to some 3 to 4 hours a day and then a few days of staying put. To be honest with kids that is about all they seem to be able to live with. So we plan our Europe trip this summer with those criteria in mind.
