Just a quick tip for the Chunnel.

Now chaps, it has been said many times that a ffrr will fit into the standard carriages on the Chunnel, it is however quite tight, last year on the way to le mans we booked the standard carriage, but bottled it an veered off to the high lane. This was fine as we were early and they let us on anyway.

This year we booked a high carriage from the start, just specify a roof box on your car when booking, it is the same price. It was a good job we did as they turned away a couple of discos in front of me who were on standard tickets.

There is loads more room and no risk of forgetting to drop it down an rip the aerial off........ All for no extra cost. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

I took the FF on Chunnel at Easter

I went in high lane, but bloke said "you'll be alright.." Stuck me in regular carriage

Tight :

Yes cheers Evil or Very Mad the Nav aerial was literally a few
Inches off the roof.
As said above, it's the width that made the real difference ...
Literally tyres squeeked against metal "kerb" the whole way
Down the train. It's very low kerb , so did no damage Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

I usually go over height - as you say, no difference in cost, just availability

The only downside is that if there are delays, you can be more impacted as not all trains run with overheight carriages.

Blimey E4 Guy - that's tight.

Glad you posted that pic as it gives a good idea of just how much room there is. All very well the Chunnel guys showing pics of empty carriages in their websites. Did you have to lower the air suspension to get that in?

Didn't need to lower it fortunately.

We were last car on the train , and had to slowly drive full length of the train to exit,
Tyres rubbing on narrow metal "kerbs".

Roof had clearance , but was nervous over GPS aerial Rolling Eyes Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

I've always booked the overheight carriage, and on the way back from Le Mans last week was surprised to find some of the supercars in our carriage, I guess because they can't do the approach angle on the upper deck and maybe also due to the width required for big doors.

That must have been nice for them to share a carriage with a distinguished car like the FFRR Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I always just book the normal carriage as you have more availability and lower my car when I go on the train. Sometimes they put me in the overheight, but most times I just go in the normal carriages.

I've never had a problem with height or car tyre width against the metal kerbs, although with a car trailer that is wider than the FF the trailer wheels rub slightly in the normal carriage. Thumbs Up

I didn't think you were allowed into regular height with a trailer ?

Whenever I've booked, they have always put me in over height as the doors open wider - the regular doors aren't wide enough to get a trailer around

I'm sure I've been in the normal carriage with my car trailer, but could be wrong as I also use the tunnel when I'm not towing and it doesn't make much difference to me which carriage I'm on.

Are the higher carriages able to take a caravan too or is there another carriage for them?

Instead of worrying about normal height carriages and widths etc. use the Ferry! Rolling Eyes Previous cars:

Ferry Rolling with laughter

I have used the chunnel for years and with a varity of cars, I usually have the tin tent with me but when we took the D3 it went in a normal car carriage, it wasn't spacious but I didn't think it was an issue ?

We have just booked a ferry for hols this year, novelty of tunnel is wearing thin and I have thought for a couple of years it's looking tired and scruffy nowadays. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Tried booking for the 28th December and returning on Saturday 4th. Could book the high carriage on the way over but the evening ones on the return trip are already sold out. Site wouldn't let me book it for one leg of the journey. Looks like I'll be rubbing my tyres on the way there and on the way back. 2006 4.4 V8 Vogue SE
