3.6 TDV8. An endless search for the correct oil

Hi All,

Time to service my 3.6 TDV8 and I'll be doing it myself this time. I'm left perplexed in making a decision on oil. When new it appears the Land Rover (Ford) spec was for 5w30 A1 oil. The only oil I can find for sale in this grade is Castrol GTX. Searching the handbook I have found two things. One is the specification of WSS-M2C921-A for Non-DPF and WSS-M2C913-B for DPF. Second is a discontuation from Castrol stating

WSS-M2C913-B/C specification engine oil used in 4.2/4.4 AJV8 Gasoline and non DPF Diesel engines 2.7 TDV6, 3.0 TDV6, 3.6 TDV8, 4.4 TDV8, Defender 2.2 Puma and Freelander 2.2 TD4

\0 Castrol SLX Professional Longtec A5 5W-30 is replaced by
\0 Castrol EDGE Professional A5 5W-30

What do you all use? The one thing that I have noted is that the 5w30 A1 GTX that I have found states as its main sales claim 'superior sludge protection'.

As the turbos can be an issue on the 3.6 TDV8 I'm wondering if the 5W30 A1 GTX is likely to be my best bet?

The other two I've found are Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5 or ELF Evolution 900 SXR.

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks for the replies. Needed to hear from some people that had actually used different oil to put my mind at rest.

Out of interest do you keep to a 1-year service schedule with these or are you doing a reduced schedule?

I run all my vehicles on a 6K or 12m schedule whichever comes first for engine oil.

Air filter and fuel filter replaced every 18K or 2y

Other standard fluids (diffs, transfers, MTF) replaced every 24K or 3y.

Auto transmission fluids replaced every 30K or 4y and PAS/hydraulic, coolant replaced every 4y

I do all my own maintenance. As stated I use S&A for all my fluids (within the bounds of what they sell) and have done for a decade and probably 200K across all the vehicles I've had in that time. 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica.

*highly advised* by most RR owners to change oil every 5,000 miles, at least every 12 months.

My servicing schedule is an oil and filter change every 5,000, which alternates with a full service on the next 5,000 (addition of air filters, pollen filter). Every 4th service (I.e. every 20,000 miles) I change the fuel filter, brake fluid, power steering fluid and coolant.

Australia 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Bournville

A1 has been superseded by A5.

I've been using Castrol Magnatec A5 5W30 in my non-DPF 4.4 TDV8 but now I'm changing over to Castrol Magnatec Stop-Start A5 5W30 for its later 913-D spec with its significantly improved bearing wear protection. I share my oil with my son's 3.0 TDV6 D4 so any extra bearing wear protection is welcomed.

Looking at the suggestions in replies a lot seem to line up with the oil specification for the 4.4 TDV8, is the specification for the 3.6 TDV8 now considered the same?

I know the 4.4 doesn't have the turbo concerns of the 3.6 so just wanted to check as the handbook shows WSS-M2C934-B for the 4.4 TDV8, but WSS-M2C921-A for the 3.6.

Looking at the oils suggested all seem to be in specification with WSS-M2C934-B, but I can't see any referencing WSS-M2C921-A

The 4.4 has a DPF and requires low SAPS (Low ash) spec oil. I can't see an issue running this in a 3.6 if this is all you can find in the right quantity. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Yes, apologies; I was implying the 4.4 TDV8 spec in my reply above. Hope that’s not confused too much; your post caught my interest as I really struggled to find the low ash spec required for the DPF mentioned by @JayGee. As I only needed a top up I ended up buying a 1ltr Castrol Edge Professional C1 from Amazon. The car’s due a full change after Easter and, following this thread discussion, I think I’m going with Opie or Smith & Allan rather than a main stream brand.

Perhaps it might be worth giving either of these suppliers a call to see what they say. TDV8 4.4 2012

The correct spec for the 4.4 is labelled 'C1' and easily ordered through either Opie or S&A via their online ordering process. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The workshop manual shows 934 as recommended for 3.6 when fitted with DPF, so the engine itself is clearly able to use that same spec whether or not DPF-equipped. 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica.
