2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Adriatic Blue
Temperature gauge rising

More advice needed

Today is the first day I've really done any distance in my new 05 td6' temp seems to sit perfect until you go up a hill and rises to about 3/4 well just before that line, then comes back down again. Also the same in traffic and I've not heard the fan cut in?

Any advice on anything I can check to see if someone has unplugged something?

Maybe the viscus fan clutch is stuck but from what I've read they usually stick on resulting in the fan running all the time, alternativly maybe the thermostat stuck closed or coolant pump not pumping.

Might have nothing to do with this but....cold ir is coldsh, well t was 11 degrees outside, but when you hit ar con it gets warmer??

Car has not used any water in the 200 miles I've drove nd no leaks on drive etc

I hope it's thermostat too !

Range rover is in the garage now

Mechanic doesnt think it is thermostat as all the pipes are hot, and so it water coming back into header tank.

He is going to look at the thermostat cooler thing on the EGR now, he has also noticed that the car does not have a egr, it has a delete kit or blank plate or something?

Also had the car running outside his garage for an hour and temp gauge didnt move past the middle, only seems to be when going uphill and sometimes when in traffic

anything else to check?

EGR blanking kit is a common upgrade people do, dont think it should affect cooling. To be honest I would think even if the stat is stuck shut you would still get hot water return to headder tank.

Is the fan definatly going?

You should be able to get to rad hoses and feel the temp .... that would tell you if stat is opening.

yes all the hoses are hot

car sat for an hour running, there is one fan going but the noisy one you would expect to come on if the car was overheating didnt come on.

Think the small one is for the A/C condenser .... big one is connected to a viscous clutch arrangement IIRC .... maybe that is shot but as I said most people report when it fails it usually sticks on resulting in the RR sounding like a jumbo jet on takeoff.

Turn the AC off and test again as if they leave the AC on there could be jsut enough air flowing over the rad with an open thermostat to keep it cool but when loaded up with heat from a turbo as well being dumped into the water system climbing a hill and more strain on the gearbox the AC fan alone isn't enough.

TBH i have no viscous fan on mine and even during offroading up steep gradients up and down i haven't had the needle move from just a smidge below middle Smile

I bet the coolant isn't that great either so i'd flush the system first incase there is some sludge causing a loss of heat dumping ability from the radiator pack.

The coolant should be flushed every 3 years but in reality its never done as part of the service schedule, much like brake/PAS/Diff/Trans fluids that tend to get left until they are 5 years or more old and some poor sap flushes the lot and finds them looking like crud most of the time Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I've had this problem with every Land Rover I've had over the last 30 years (yes including my TD6 FFRR) & the cause is always exactly the same. The radiator core is blocked & no back flushing is not effective. The real answer is a new radiator & while your in there replace the thermostat as it'll probably be cooked.

Not too expensive in the grand scheme of things really...Good luck.. Thumbs Up The reason women's minds are cleaner than a mans mind is that women change their minds more often!

Update

Mechanic had it out for a drive and got temp up, plugged it into snap on machine and the temperature of coolant was 71 degrees, but the gauge was nearly upto 3/4

He is trying again tomorrow so see what he finds

Update

Changed thermostat for new one
Changed Radiator for a used one from a 50k car
Changed Electric fan
Changed Intercooler
Changed A/C Rad

Still doing exactly the same!

Whats next? Could it be something as daft as knakered clocks? As when you first start in morning its straight onto top of blue before you even start the engine
