Is my Nav goosed causing the issue

HI Folks,

It always seems to happen when Mrs B "borrows" the FF. I set her off on her journey with her phone paired to the blluetooth unit and the nav programmed in for her route down to Portsmouth to drop one of the kids off to Uni.....

Everything normal...

When she got back she left me to put it back in the garage (as I son't trust with this bit) and the head unit had completely changed. I've got what I believe are the old screen colours and no nav appearing in the menu..

Is the upgraded screen (with RR splash image) and the colour scheme all part of the later disc..? Lights come on and flicker on the nav dvd unit in the boot so there is power but no option on the HU display and as I say, all the display has changed to some horrible blue colour and different layout..? Ash

Your sat nav is not displaying on the head unit so it has reverted back to the blue display via the TV unit. It is probably a firmware issue. Is the sat nav unit a CD based Mk3 or the newer DVD based Mk4? If is says DVD on the front of the sat nav unit it will be a MK4.

Try turning the ignition off and then restart the car and see if it comes back up. If necessary leave it overnight and try it inthe morning. Since you stated that you have a Range Rover logo splash screen I would expect it may be running a modified / hacked firmware version. Do you have traffic cameras on the sat nav? If so this is probably a V32 firmware mod which can cause repeated crashing of the sat nav system especially if it gets lots of TMC data. They get overloaded and crash.

If you are getting no disk errors being displayed then this is most likely a fault with the laser.

If you select the "set" function on the bottom left of the head unit it will go into the configuration screen for the sat nav. If you look at the top right hand corner you should see SW 4-1 / 00 or something similar displayed. If it is SW 4-1 / 01 then it is modified firmware.

If you google MK4 sat nav firmware you should find plenty o info on the various BMW and Land Rover forums.
I had a similar problem with my MK4 that was getting overloaded by the TMC data and 3D images. I switched both of these off and it seems to be behaving itself.

There are a lot of non OEM modified firmware and map disks around on the market. These can be problematic in these units.

Thx Baldrick.

It is indeed the Mk4 DVD unit with the V32 software update.

Had lock ups quite a lot in the past as well. Tried the off on approach but no joy. I'll leave it overnight now and see what happens. If it does come back I'll turn the TMC stuff off as I don't use it anyway.

I do sometimes get the incorrect disk message so maybe it has gone bad.

thx for the reply Ash

Mine started playing up again the other day. It seems to have phases where everything is ok then it plays up. It kept rebooting on a trip back from Wales. It even locked up the on board computer. When I got home I had the blue screen and no nav function. I left it overnight and it seemed to sort itself out. It's worth a try.

I just had my BM54 upgraded by Baris at Carphonics.uk. He also repairs sat nav units if you have major problems. His service is first class. http://www.carphonics.co.uk/

He told me about the problems with the modified V32 firmware. If you keep getting no disk errors or repeated crashes it could be the laser going faulty. You can get a new laser fitted if that turns out to be the problem.

sounds very similar to my issues.

Fingers crossed for the "let it sort itself out" fix.. Whistle

Been in touch with Baris about the upgrade to the BM54 so may just have to send him a "few" units if it doesn't work.

Thanks again for your help.!

I'm still thinking about ripping the whole damn lot out and adding a new HU with Bluetooth/Ipod etc but the Vogues are a lot of work. It just seems silly throwing good money to fix what is already a pretty poor system. Ash

This wouldn't be related to using different keys would it?

On my VSE there are several customisable option depending on which key i use.

I would say SWMBO's key, but lets face it she never gets to drive it anyway Whistle

Well wouldn't you know....

Seems my RR was having one of those moments yesterday. Turned it on theo morning for my daily commute to the station car park and had the RR splash screen, later UI and nav all working perfectly.

I will try turning off the TMC stuff to see if it helps but my god these cars can be temperamental can't they..!

(clearly a female model of the car... Nothing major wrong but you can never tell when they will be in a bad mood... Whistle ) Ash
