So, you are most likely to want to quote the last person who posted in a thread, but you can't, there is a Reply button instead, but every other post has a Quote button - I don't get it? Where's the benefit in that? Discovery 4 HSE

It's to stop people doing this unnecessarily every time.

I agree Stan, unless you don't hear them properly, but that doesn't apply to written communication.

It's to prevent poor, lazy use of the "quote" button when what is actually wanted is reply.

There is virtually no reason you need to quote the whole of the last post in a thread to add a further comment. Forum threads are chronological, so it is totally obviously which comments you might be referring to.

Quoting is repeating, and is unnecessary as what is being replied to is above what you're adding to the thread.

Think about it - if you're down the pub you don't repeat everything your fellow drinkers have just said when you have something to add? But when you have to recall something said a while ago, you might have to say "you know you said .... "..

Where necessary, quoting is absolutely fine, to recall something earlier on in the thread where the conversation flow hasn't talked about it or to pick out a specific comment within a post.

i think Adam is being pedantic, dont you agree David/Kurt? .

actually Martin, when down the pub i'd be drunk so everything will be repeated Mr. Green

seriously, one of my biggest bugbears was the quoting of the post above hence i started editing so it only left the [] brackets ...i think the forum is much cleaner and easier to read now.. ... - .- -.

Sometimes you want to quote the post above - or part of it if you wish to highlight it. It is very annoying when someone posts lots of pictures and then someone replies with a quote of all the pictures just to say - Thumbs Up and that happens a lot in other forums.

For instance here, where I'd want to say it would need repeating because I'd have forgotten what you said! Laughing
