Dull thud, ?

Hi,last couple of weeks annoying ' dull thud' coming from top of engine bay ?.Cant feel anything thro the steering and JUST past the MOT this week.Seems to be coming from more over the passenger side.Any thought, ways I can find it without buying anything first.
Cheers Mark

Just tried raising n lowering the suspension and it goes up and down as requested but the near side does make a 'creaking' sound. Is this a warning of bag failure or is there a joint that needs attention ?

stick in off road, liberally spray some highly concentrated fairy liquid/water onto the whole strut ..look for leaks , if none the 'lubrication' might just stop the rubber sticking.. ... - .- -.

Update ,couldn't see anything wrong with joints etc. so bit the bullet and ordered a new Delphi n/s strut unit.Decided to go with these as read differing views on here regarding Dunlops.Anyhow, removed the unit in 1hour and to my surprise see that it is a Dunlop with a date sticker on 10/10 ?.Checked it out and bag looks fine but seems a bit of play at the top.Is there a rubber seal under the top plate that can be changed ?.Checked out the o/s unit and this is a Delphi ?.Is this the original that has outlasted a 3 year old Dunlop unit ?.Will be ordering a unit for this side now as the 'dull thud ' has gone and it rides on AIR again.Looks to me as someone has changed one side and not the other but it is still going strong !!

The sealing ring (metal looking one) at the top looks a bit lopsided to me, could be the cause....

There is no rubber seal, but there should have been a thin papery gasket between the top of the strut and the turret - it is usually stuck to one or the other... .

If you hold a top turret pin with each hand you can wiggle it, it seems quite loose ?.No gasket on either part.

There is a bearing race in there, this could be shot? Gasket probably discarded when the Dunlop was fitted .

Feeling the top I would agree with the bearing being shot and giving the Dull thud. Will change the other one this week now.

Changed the o/s strut today, only horror was the bottom pin.1 hour of banging/ turning notch by notch until it freed up.This one still had the paper gasket ( original Delphi ? ).Are these any good to anyone ?, neither of them leaked, just the dull thud from the n/s top bearing joint. Will be dumping them next week.
