Solar Battery Charger

Hi

I bought a solar battery charger at the weekend for use when I'm away for a few weeks at a time.
A guy at work told me his wifes SRS ECU was damaged due to using one (via the fag lighter)
It was a Merc, not sure if it makes a difference.
Can I use it on My '56 FF TDV8
It comes with croc clips to connect directly to the battery
Is it safe to use?

cheers

Geoff

My 2003MY TD6 fag lighter is live all of the time - Very handy!

The 2006MY SC is only live with ignition so you need to use the Aux in the boot on the latter FFs (or as Craig says, go straight into the fuse box).

No issues with mine either, just let the TD6 for 3+ weeks - Started on the button. 2006 4.2 SC

I struggle to see how the very low current (and voltage) from these solar chargers could damage the ECU - especially as when the charger is being used, the ignition would normally be off (and the SRS ECU should have powered down too - not much need for SRS in a parked car). Sounds like one of these issues where the dealer look for a reason to ensure that they can make the punter feel it's his fault and therefore expensive and not covered by a warranty...

I fitted one on my dash and connected to the fag lighter socket in front of clock.
One thing I have noticed is that the solar instructions state that it has not to be left conected when starting and running the engine.

I found ths strange as it does state that the panel has a one way diode to prevent power drain during darkness. Made in Scotland frae 'Girders'

I think the power spikes/fluctuations during starting could potentially damage the solar panel.

And I'd like to suggest, no croc clips they come off too easily and could cause all kinds of issues that way. I would go with the suggestions on the forum, using the various sockets that stay live after turning the ignition off. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. I'm away for a while next week. I'll give it a go in the boot socket.

Cheers

Geoff
