slight knocking tapping

Hi Guys,

Completely new to this and looking to buy a 4.4 vogue on a 53 plate with 54000 on clock. The car drives well accept as opposed to the slightly menacing growl I have heard from my previous 4l RR's this has a tapping or slight knocking noise on tick over. As a non mechanical bloke is this something to be expected in car of this age or is it perhaps a little more sinister? Be great for any thoughts before I part with my hard earned shekels! Thanks.

Welcome robmc,

I wouldn't profess to know the answer but this recent thread might start the ball rolling for you.

That link is for a different engine.

If it's a diesel like growl at idle it's more likely to be a VANOS or tappet issue on the BMW 4.4 M62 engine than the timing chain especially if it's only covered 54k miles, without hearing it, it's impossible to say.
If it is the VANOS or tappets then something as simple as an oil change with the correct grade of oil might quieten it down or it might need rebuild of the VANOS (expensive).
If it's the timing chain then the tensioner and plastic guides might have worn and need replacing (expensive).

I certainly wouldn't dismiss it as something that might not be a big issue.

My advise would be to run for the hills, unless its dirt cheap and your willing to take a gamble... Neutral

I strongly suggest to follow Craigs advice and look for another car. Craig is one of the most experienced / knowledgeable people on the forum re. the FFRRs.

I also suggest to look for a Jag V8 model or a SC (also a Jag engine just a bit more umpf Twisted Evil ) if the budget stretches that far. SCs seem to be very undervalued in the UK as they are awesome cars to drive.

Maybe Gary can set you up with something nice at a decent price: http://www.garyelliott.co.uk/prestige_cars/ MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

simply excellent advice and thank you... I'll have a quick browse of Gary's sweet shop and see what there is.... My initial thoughts were a SC maybe a little over budget as I was looking for something that can get me out of the ice rink I live during the winter whilst fiesta money buys a great deal of slightly older RR... My main car is a 335i which does excellent pirouettes that time of year! Having said that I keep hearing great things about the Jag engine. Thanks again.

Theres nothing wrong with the 4.4 BMW engine - especially if its only done 54,000 I would get a mechanic to listen to it! It might be something very simple.

its up for £10K so engineer seems the way... I also noticed that the head lamps have some condensation inside...not to any great degree... is this a simple replacement of the headlamp units? Thanks for your feedback folks.

£10k seems a bit expensive? they go for £6-8k at the moment.

THe rattle you can hear is sometimes caused (on start up from cold with mine anyway) by the vanos where the Chain rattles against the top of the engine cover. Get your engineer to look for excess slack or wear on the chain.

I did the pressure relief valve on mine - its about 40 quid, and cured the rumble. I've heard of people leaving this and not having any problems. It is a "rumble" on start up only though and not a ticking!

This fix is well documented on the BMW forums.
