Towing MPG

Towing MPG
When towing the caravan (twin axle Lunar Quasar FB) I found I was getting 20-21mpg (TD6)
However I have recently been towing a box trailer I find that when fully loaded I am lucky to get 18-19 and not much better when empty on the return journey. Admittedly I have the trailer loaded up but would say it weighs no more than the Caravan would have.
Trailer is one of those hire tow a box type with a tapered front 12' long.

Any idea's as the cross section of the trailer is a lot less than the caravan??

thanks Mine was a blue one! Smile

Andy,
The caravan structure lends itself to economy with a sloped from end. I found the same with my D3. With the caravan on I would get 22-24mpg and with a smaller, thought similar weighted box trailer it'd go below 20mpg - I put it down to the "box" in 'box trailer'

Haven't towed a box trailer with the FF but can say with my TDV8 I tow a Lunar Lexon 650 and I get very similar MPG as you do Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Sounds about right.

Went to London in October and we where getting 16.9mpg according to the trip computer towing a sterling trekker at 1900kg had a lighter van before and never managed above 19mpg towing that.

Tried sitting at 50-55 but would rather spend the extra on fuel than take all day to get there. Gone

24-25mpg unladen, 19-22mpg fully loaded at 3500kg. I drive fairly slowly with the trailer, esp when it's fully loaded.

I've not towed a caravan.

Iv had it up plated from 1680 to 1900kg, as when we put two gas bottles, the mover, battery and a few bits of kit we were pretty much full!

Battery 30kg
Mover 70kg
Gas 30kg
Total 130kg

Original load 220k

Left us with 90kg for everything else.......
Which for a family of 4 isnt much at all. So a bit of grovelling to lunar followed and they let me have a chassis weight upgrade. Extra 220kg goes a long way and gives us 440kg of load to play with! Ore something like that, pretty early to remember exact figures tho Rolling Eyes

Tyres were upgraded to take the extra weight but thr rest of the chassis was rated at 950kg per axle! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Seems to be (depending on model) about even on the mpg with a caravan and although Kurt's (WTF is on the trailer, aero engine?) is a big load it is just about shielded aerodynamically by the FF.
So the box trailer even though it has a taper at the front must be aerodynamically very poor.
Next trip a lower box trailer that sits below roof line I think.

Thanks for the replys.

PS. Because the Motorway height is disabled when towing the trailer had a slightly nose up attitude the Caravan club etc always say level or nose down, I think that's maybe for stability but I think it would also increase drag.

PPS NMJ ! FF@ 2.5 tonnes Van at 1.9+ Upwards of 4.5 tonnes! Whistle Hope you serviced your brakes Thumbs Up Mine was a blue one! Smile

Only had 4 trips out with caravan on back of FF so not had a fair chance on a longer run, though D3 remapped would peak at 26mpg on a decent motorway run...I remember a 26mpg on an N road through france with 1800kg Bessacarr 635GL, 2 canoes, 2 bikes and the odd drop of wine Whistle Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........
