13 Car Accident

On the way to work this morning there was a longer and more stationary traffic jam than normal (there's normally not much traffic), and then an ambulance went by. So I turned round and took a back route to the next motorway junction. When I got there no traffic at all was coming from the direction I would normally come from.

When I checked the news I found this picture. I normally join the motorway from the slip road on the right. You can see the battered central reservation and also tyre marks across the grass as cars tried to avoid a collision, although some of them maybe emergency service vehicles or just driving round to get by.

Fortunately there was only one minor injury, although the motorway was closed in both directions for 3 and a half hours.

Notice the warning sign that snow can make things slippy on the bend 500m further. I think that sign should be moved back a bit.

This all happened about 15mins before I got there. Quite thankful I was a little later than intended.

Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Mr. Green

You can see the shine on the road surface, it looks slippy. Is it law there to have winter tyres on at this time of year? Previously..

I think the law is you must have the appropriate tyres. So if it's a nice warm sunny day in November and you're on summer tyres that's ok. If you'd have been in that smash in that weather on summer tyres you'd be in trouble - and rightly so I think.

It was 6:30am when the crash happened and it was dark then. I think whoever caused it was just driving too fast and hadn't realised there was snow on the road where there's a bend. Just supposition though.

Just out of interest - what's the speed limit on that stretch ?
Is it variable for differing conditions or times of the year ?
Just curious . . . .

120kmph - 75mph approx.

Not variable, but most people slow down when there's snow on the motorway.

On the inside lane you'd probably be ok, but not on the outside.
