Tow bar armature

Is the "tow bar armature" really just the standard fitted armature (complete with recovery hook) with a bit of square tubing welded on to hold the tow bar attachments ?

Have a look at the information on the recent post Tow bar pics by hughjayteens...

I asked the same question myself and dan_uk_1984 very helpfully posted workshop diagram for the tow bar equipment.

Apparently, you cannot use the armatures that are fitted (inc towing eye) as standard - the diagram shows there are very slight differences between the standard fittings and those which are required for the removable tow hitch coupling.

I have considered making (welding or bolting) some kind of cross bar between the standard armatures as I want something to carry bikes with (not towing), but haven't got around to it yet.

I will probably just end up fitting Westfalia towbar afterall (they seem to keep their value judging by resale prices of secondhand equipment sometimes available on eBay) and their kit includes the wiring for the light boards which plug directly into the cars loom (Single or Twin electrics)

Westfalia prices start from £350+ for the kit.
