Crying or Very sad it's pathetic really. I went to the old pentland dealership in Edinburgh with my wife to look for a FFRR. We were looking at the stock outside and at one point there were 3 salesmen standing looking at us from the showroom window. I looked at them a few times to make eye contact but none of them came out to talk to us. We were there a good 15 minutes and I remember saying to my wife that I could not believe they would not come out to make contact so stuff them. Previously..

don't want them in my face fawning all over me but a polite nod to my existence would be nice.

To be fair, I don't like the pushy sell, but its nice to know they have acknowledged you.

I looked at a new Volvo V70 T5 in 1999 and was totally ignored at the dealers, until I walked across the car park in my jeans and trainers and got in my BMW 735i.

2 sales chaps rushed up the car park after me and I gave them a polite smile......as I drove off. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Some like the attention, others prefer to be left alone. TBH it seems they're up against it, unless of course they're all clairvoyant. Can't do right for doing wrong.

If you walk into a place cold, without knowing anyone there it is wholly unreasonable to expect them to read your mind. And to be honest, the polite acknowledgement is often seen as not paying enough attention.

Where is that fine line between ignorance and fawning? In a different position for everyone who walks through the door it seems.

Of course it's way too difficult to ask for what you want, yes? And phrases like "Excuse me, do you have a moment?" don't exist. !! Rolling Eyes

Can't agree with the clairvoyant comment, I'm afraid.

Common courtesy should demand a "hello" at least.

Something along the lines of "feel free to look around and if you need any help my name's x, if you need anything, I'll be around the showroom", isn't fawning, but it at least acknowledges that you aren't invisible, or worse still they've assessed your likelyhood as a potential buyer and concluded that you're not worth even that! Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

^^ I don't agree.
Any salesman, who is not busy, that sees someone entering the premises should at least say hello and at least follow that with a "just ask if you need any help".... Unless they want someone else to get the sale that is! Previously..

I have been in professional sales all my working life and use main dealers as an example of how not to do it Very Happy
In 30 years of dealers I have found very few (less than 3%) than I would employ, peanuts and monkeys !! Very Happy
