Last 2 paragraphs of the story, can't see them sticking to that...

Quote:
A JLR spokesman also told PH that the new production plans will not affect JLR's UK-based production facilities, as the volume for Chinese-built cars will come from sales growth and will not replace British-built production. The parts for the Chinese Jaguars and Land Rovers will also be largely UK-sourced and shipped to China for final assembly.

So they're seriously saying that it's cheaper to ship parts to the other side of the world for assembly and then ship them back again. Censored 2006 Mercedes CLS

It is.

Many things get shipped all around the world for the benefit of cheap labour.

Chinese built BMWs and Mercedes don't make it back to Europe, no reason why JLR would start doing it.

Great Carbon footprint to save a bob or two on cheap ass labour rates.

I wonder if anyone actually looks at the opportunity cost of such decisions. Discovery 4 HSE

Whether or not these cars make it back to Europe, it still dilutes the value of the brand on a worldwide basis Crying or Very sad

Hasn't harmed any of the German manufacturers who have been building out in China for a long time.

Which Prestige Brands have been (publicly known) building cars from China?

As above - BMW, Mercedes, VAG.

Don't forget, LR have sent CKD kits out for assembly abroad since they were founded - Spanish, Brazilian or Iranian built LRs didn't stop people being buying Range Rovers Wink

I would say Mercedes "reputation" for build quality and reliability is not what it was and for many, VAG and BMW have moved to be mass market manufacturers. Nearly every house around has a VAG or BMW outside! (Excluding Bentley & Lambo within VAG but do they build in China?)

Mercedes now have a dreadful reputation for the build quality of cars manufactured in the USA and South Africa. Let's not mention India. Discovery 4 HSE

The reputation of the X5 is largely unaffected despite it being manufactured in the deep south (US). As Martin said, manufacturers have been doing it for donkeys years. Honda and Toyota do it in the US and the output largely is only destined for that market.

A lot of new money is emerging in China and there has been a huge demand for luxury goods. Manufacturing vehicles on-shore to service that market makes economical sense (for the manufacturer at least). JLR is not the first chasing these customers. Pretty much every manufacturer has/is trying to establish an operation in China. Paul
