Range Rover vs standing water = undershield damage

Having driven through standing water yesterday, there started a noise coming from underneath sounding like a plastic panel had come loose and was touching a wheel.

The noise was worse when backing off the throttle and was worst when reversing, so I was thinking it might be something touching a prop or driveshaft.

Anyway, got it up on the ramps to have a look and discovered that the cause was one of the heat-shields fitted between the exhaust and the underside of the vehicle. It had ripped on one side and the loose shielding had been forced up and was fouling the prop. A couple of minutes prising it away from the prop shaft cured the problem.

So if you don't wish the same to happen to you, tell one's driver to be a little cautious when approaching potentially deep standing water on the roads.

See photos taken after repair (taken from underneath standing roughly where the front seats are, looking backwards).

The shielding in the centre of the picture was touching the prop.

The shielding had ripped on the right-hand side.

I would say that the water was maybe 6" deep - kerb height, at most, and maybe 6' across (location was Tealby - Bully Hill road near Market Rasen in Lincs)

If I had been in a "normal" car I would have slowed down considerably, but was maybe doing 40-50mph as I went through. So, basically, much quicker than in a car, but still would not expect this sort of damage in a RR.

The part itself is £45 plus fitting, but tomorrow I am going to see whether a local main dealer will accept it as a warranty repair...

hitting standing water at that speed is like hitting a brick wall - I would expect at that speed it would also rip off body pannels... lucky thats the only damage it did - didn't you see it??
