Hi again

Just been driving the car recently and noticed a bit of a rattle/tapping noise, not particularly on startup but when the engine is running and warm.

It's almost a sound which is similar to a diesel engine running - I've read about the m62 engines doing this with no apparent issues but just waned to get some advice.

Car is a 52 plate L322 , 56,000 miles - just had the radiator and thermostat done

I have a feeling you are talking about the BMW V8 engine and they have an issue with their VANOS system (variable timing of the camshafts) I believe. Look on the BMW forums for more info I'd say but there is also some info on here on that. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I am not sure what a 52 plate stands for but by 2011 SC has had this same noise since I purchased it last August. It appears to be a non-threatening but fixable problem with the chain tensioners. They now have a kit fixes this if under warranty. It takes about 15 hours. There is a thread from a few weeks back that discuss's this. Mike

As above, I had mine done under warranty.

It takes way more than 15 hours, my car was in for over a week but they were taking their time and being methodically anal about it.

I have a photo taken by the service manager of my engine bay when it was all stripped out and I it really scared me, it's a mammoth job.

Luckily, touch wood, it has been fine ever since and is now as smooth as it should be. Discovery 4 HSE

Vogue12345 has the 4.4 petrol BMW engine, so may be a little easier.

I'd pop it to a decent specialist and see if it's the vanos unit first. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

A diesel like rattle on M62 does sound like a VANOS issue but obviously difficult to diagnose noises over the net. Search Youtube for peoples videos of the M62 VANOS rattle and compare.
If it does sound like the VANOS then first thing to do would be to make sure you are running the correct grade of oil as it can make a difference to the amount of noise or completely silence it. Try a good quality, fully synthetic 5W30 or 5W40 grade oil plus filter, especially if it hasn't been changed for awhile. Check out the wiki on M62 VANOS rattle.
It's also worth mentioning that the tappets on these engines are hydraulic which can also lead to tappet type rattles but are more likely on startup then disappear once pumped up unless some are blocked, again an oil change will help with the tappet noise.

The other rattle these can suffer from is timing chain tensioner and/or guide failure. Again check youtube for M62 timing chain rattle for the noise this makes, the noise will be in a slightly different area to the VANOS and often a lot louder and more constant.
The tensioner can be replaced fairly easily as a first port of call (or see below for checking for guide failure) and if it still rattles then the guides will need replacing. The timing guides are only plastic on the M62 and over time wear and break. You can check if this has happened as bits of the guide often end up in the sump. It does mean removing the sump to check.
I'm afraid replacing the guides is a fairly involved job but doable by a competent DIY mechanic.

My money would be on VANOS and a simple oil change to sort it given the low miles.
