Ok I understand I've to wire them into either the spotlights in the dash fascia's or the footwell lights.

Question is what specification of cabling should I use to extend the tread plate cabling to the either of these locations? Not big on Auto electrics  Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White

The circuit you are going to connect into is fused at 5A so you need 5A standard auto cable.
This would do you,

I got the required 5amp cables today! I've now removed all necessary interior components however the cables going into the fascia spotlight are brown and red, which is which? Assuming ones live and ones neutral? I've had a search but can't find anything any help would be appreciated Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White

this is where a multimeter will come in handy Andy...

Red will be +12V, brown will be -ve or earth.

Ok got them fitted..... well the passenger side started getting dark and decided to call it a day

Anyhow here's how I went about it:-

First I cut off the JLR connector to expose the wires.



I then soldered Halford's 5amp cabling on to both of the wires and put some heat shrink 'wrap' over the soldered sections of cable and heated up with a hair dryer to create a nice tight seal around the newly soldered wires.





I think checked wires on an old car battery so I was able to work out which wire was which. Upon working out that the yellow wire with the purple stripe was the live I Stripped the dash side panel off and removed the passenger side cupholder to allow easier access to the dash fascia spot light.




The spotlight has two wires which are connected into it, red and brown (red being the live as stated by nicedayforit )



I then stripped back the cable wrap which was keeping these cables together and used scotchlock clips to connect the live into the red on the spotlight and the neutral into the brown.



The cables were then run up behind the dash and hidden out of sight
