How far can I drive with no coolant ?

Got a coolant leak - should I insist the RAC recover it or if they can find a local garage should I risk driving it ?

I was planning on telling them to recover it, but want to check that's reasonable ?

I guess I should tell them I'll only drive it if then take responsibility for any damage Very Happy

Just answered my own question I think.......

Wouldnt drive it too far, if at all, wont take long to damage the engine with no coolant.

Not sure how long in the ff, but our old lc dropped its coolant when a bottom hose went, lasted about half a mile and the head warped, never the same again. Needs to go on a truck! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

When you say coolant leak, how much? Has is dumped everything or just lost a bit ?

If its everything, then don't drive it.

If its just a bit, and the leak is not fast, then topping up with water will get you somewhere. As long as water in it, then it'll stay cool. The % amount of anti-freeze to water is not as critical as having water. i.e. don't worry about diluting the coolant by simply adding water alone. V8 or else ...

England

My "middle" hose popped off the rad (cloud of steam etc), managed to drive (very gently) a further three miles, temp gauge stayed at vertical throughout. But above advice is sage, don't if you can help it. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Careful just adding water in the alps.

As it Gets really cold overnight it may freeze, in uk would be fine, but could easily drop cold enough to freeze the water if it was dilute enough Big Cry There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thumbs Up Thanks - that's what I figured - I'll need to drive it out of the underground car park, but no further
