So gents...my poor old DeWalt has finally given up and after sourcing a price for replacement parts and new batteries I have decided that maybe a new drill is in order. There's plenty out there and I am not a heavy user of a drill either. I also see some twin sets around with a drill and impact driver ?

Any thoughts...I have had good service of DW but I am hearing the new stuff isn't as good as Makita's...

I need a few bases ticked;

1. Combi - drill / hammer
2. Lighting on front end...DW had it and very good idea
3. decent torque 50Nm +

Suggestions please chaps  Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

If it's a battery machine tool I normally buy cheap as the batteries need replacing before the machine wears out, and by then you might as well buy a new again - as you've found out.

No tried DeWalt or Milwaukee, but lately I've been buying Makita and they seem ok.

I've bought Bosch before and been burnt - I now avoid like the plague.

Heard Hitachi are good but they should be for what they charge.

90% of my kit is 18v xrp Dewalt.
But, the makita drill's seem more controlled and the milwaukee ones are shiny and red!!

I've gone for Makita after the DeWalts caved in. So far very impressed (3 years old now).

All my builders used either Makita or Panasonic. Graham

Panasonic.....tbh I just called into Arco for some bits and they are Panasonic stockists, they say that they get a lot of dewalt users now buying that kit...

I think it may well be Makita/Panasonic now....no one filling me with confidence on the DW stuff and the Milwaukee stuff is expensive...

Makita are good, I brought my staff Dewalt 18v hammer drills with Lithum Iron batteries good bit of kit but it has a useless led light and we have had three where the hammer action has packed up. to be fair they get some abuse and supplier repaired them under warranty. Mine was a blue one!

They are all sufficient for light use, we have the "new" lithium dewalt kit running 4.0ah batteries and it is pretty good, the smaller combi drill is fine for light drilling and screwdrivering, whereas the more expensive and more robust xrp model, which we also have is better for more extreme drilling feats.......

The cheaper makita drills break all the time but their li kit seems better.

Our old dewalt 18v nimh kit has seen better days after 4 years of use, but our 14v nimh/nicad drill has lasted well and has just died at 8 years old!

At the end of the day they will all break if you mistreat them... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Tried them all and currently using Makita, best one I ever had was a Hitachi and it is still working 30 years after a mate who worked for the GPO rescued it from the bin at his work.

Having my house old farm house done up I bought 18 months ago an AEG pro, 3.0 ah 18v and its had some stick with the amount of work its done and to be fair for £123 which was on sale at B&Q has done well, when I have had the builders and carpenter in they all use Makita stuff, but they are always used daily and for long jobs.
Do you use all the time or just a few times a month? does it warrant top end price?

Ps don't bother with anything Ni cad batteries, go lithium only....last far longer.  If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Makita for me had it 6 years now and zero issues. It feels great in my hand I think Elton John even wrote a song about them or was that Nikita  Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

As a business we only use dewalt and find it very good and it lasts.
We have upgraded about 5 kits to the new 4.0 AH Lithium type. The lads have had them about a year with not one problem.
I would recommend these for both light and heavy use.

I had a lot of DeWalt stuff in the past and it was pretty good. Awful batteries but generally very good.

GF's dad had Makita they have taken a considerable amount of welly! I was impressed enough to buy the twin pack (DLX2005M)

Really impressed so far.
