As I understand it, the new rates are effective from 1st April, so if you get your tax by 31st march you will pay the current rate. Thumbs Up

However, the DVLA Gestapo may have other ideas - they seem to be a law unto themselves, including their idea that personal information I am LEGALLY OBLIGED to give them they can just sell on to make a profit at will Twisted Evil 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

I have just taxed 2 x vehicles (both run out on 31/03/2014) for 12 months at the "old" price online - Gone through no problem.

And to set the record straight on the "new" system......................

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) or tax will be a paperless system and paper tax discs will physically not exist. Lots of obvious advantages to this................

But it actually creates a problem downstream. You go to view a used car. The seller says it has 12 months tax on it. Has it? There is now nothing in the windscreen. How do you know? There are 101 opportunities here for the less than honest car seller to have a field day "Of course this lovely FF has 12 months tax on it Sir, that's worth £500 itself!"............You get the idea I am sure.

The guy who buys the car thinks he has 12 months tax on it. Or does he? When he is pulled by the Police do you not think it is very "convenient" for those types who regularly drive without tax and insurance to retort with "the guy that sold me the car told me it had 12 months tax on it, honestly officer, he said it did, I am the innocent party here!"

Easiest solution? YOU buy a car and YOU tax it - End of.

Oh and the rumour of not being able to get a refund on VED is utter nonsense. Of course you can refund it, it will work EXACTLY as it does today where you need to get your refund in before the last day of the month or you've lost a month.

The new system is great not perfect. If you sell a car mid month you've lost that month. If you buy a car mid month you've paid a full month for maybe a few days but I do like the principle of YOU buy a vehicle and YOU tax it that leaves no room for the scumbugs to either
- Sell inclusive tax on used vehicles that does not exist or
- Drive around in untaxed cars and when they are pulled over give the "Oh, I was sold it with tax on it" line.....

And lastly................If you're selling I personally think that you're better off. If you sell your car, there is a kind of assumption that the tax is included. It can be a bit awkward telling the new owner that you're going to cash it in! New system - You claim it back thereby giving you a few extra ££ for your wheels! There is always a bright side!! 2006 4.2 SC

on more positive news .. they have introduced the rolling 40year tax free date Smile

So now, as soon as your car is 40 years old , no tax to pay Smile Won't be long until those original Range Rovers will be tax exempt

You're confusing yourself. Under the impending new taxation rule, you can't sell a vehicle with road tax so your scenario can't happen.
Any current road tax is cancelled when the DVLA receive the log book with a new change of owner.

Any new owner HAS to tax the vehicle if it's going to be used on the road as you won't be able to buy a taxed vehicle..

No confusion at this end, Steptoe - I am very clear about it.

I agree, the new owner has to tax the vehicle, I was trying (and clearly not succeeding!) to give notional examples of why a paperless VED system would not viably allow VED transfers to work or would, at best, carry a lot of risk to both vehicle buyer and seller; they were not "actual" questions....... 2006 4.2 SC

I personally think it is a really good idea - as Skot says, it removes another potential for negotiation / assumption / risk in a sale.

It is also good for the seller as they get a refund on their unused tax that does not add an equivalent value to the sale... 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

One other benefit of not transferring the VED with the car sale, it will hamper the scrotes who don't have insurance from driving around in a car they've bought cheaply. If the car has no road tax, then the car will be flagged up to the Rozzers immediately it's on the road.

I think you may have used a scam site. If you google road tax renewal, a convincing looking site called http://taxdisc-direct.co.uk comes up - it charges an additional £40 for its 'service'! Shocked

The correct address is www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk where it's still £269.50/£490.00
