whine

I've got a slight whining noise when driving. It's very faint but it's there, like a noisy bearing. Anyone has the same?

Dont drive with swmbo in the car.........

Could be anything from transfer box bearings to diff to belt tensioners/alternator. Think you might need to narrow it down.. But if its not loud i doubt its terminal.... Whistle There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Exactly! She's the one who noticed! I used to own Classic Range Rovers a long time ago and the whine was something you had to get used to. The L322 is so much quieter that you notice every little noise.

I've got a metallic whine which kicks in at about 30mph. Sounds to me like bearings or diff.

Others have suggested tyre noise but as the tyres are still in good condition I haven't got round to changing them yet.

The noise has been going on for over a year now and although very slightly worse I've got used to it and just ignore it now. It does however make me think that upgrading to the newly available LR extended warranty might be a good idea. Whistle 2012 5.0L S/C

Car in for a yearly service, dealer checked the whine and says he needs to take the transmission arms off to find the source of the metallic whine. I must say it is getting noticeably louder.
Car is out of warranty of course but has only done 60,000 kms (about 37,500 miles), always serviced in the official dealer network.
Thinking of getting Land Rover pay part of the repair cost or alternatively if repair costing too much, part exchanging her for a Supercharged L405 they have in stock.
Thing is I prefer the look of the L322 but not prepared to keep her at any cost! Big Cry

Apparently it is the transfer box which needs replacing. Anyone had the same problem?

Reply drafted prior to transfer box post:

You have a nice dilemma there CSK.

If you really prefer the L322 over the L405 would you paying for the required repairs (hopefully with a meaningful LR/ dealer good will contribution) and also now investing in an extended "Approved"/ or equivalent warranty not be a truly nominal amount compared to the cost of 'upgrading' to the L405, regardless as to the fact you can afford to do so?

Or is the reality a L405 itch that now needs to be scratched Wink ?

Thumbs Up

Quite a nice dilemma to have indeed!

No particular L405 itch, I wouldn't have considered one if I hadn't had so many problems with my L322:
- RSE - now resolved
- FBH - never resolved and now gave up trying
- Noisy transfer box - will potentially cost me a lot
- Wind noise from bottom of windscreen - new clips fitted so probably resolved
- Park Distance control not working - resolved
- Heated and cooled seats not working - resolved

When it all works, it is a lovely car indeed but it has spent more time at the dealer's than on my driveway!
Now she's out of warranty I have a feeling it will be a never ending story and a potential liability.

I think the L405 doesn't look nearly as good, not as stately and dignified as the L322 but I do think it is a better car, from what I could read from other posts and test drives it has better road holding, I like to drive in a spirited manner and apparently the L405 handles the twisty bits better. L322 feels like a (nice) boat sometimes. I think Clarkson said in his review of the L405 that it was more a car for now and the L322 more a car for ever.
Thing is these are expensive cars to keep on the road when they get wrong and in the long run an L405 under warranty might come out cheaper. I'll just have to get used to the look of the new shape.
Decisions, decisions,...

Well, for what it's worth, I think the L405 looks superb!

Dealer confirms it is the transfer box, he says noise coming from below, apparently it needs a new one and is sending me a quote. JLR will partly pay for it but haven't been informed what's at my cost and what's theirs yet. Had a ridiculously low part-exchange offer on mine so not sure what to do. Buy L405 SC or repair mine.
