"I'd rather watch my Range Rover burn then drive a Jeep!"

I left home at 01:00 heading for Welwyn Garden City. The car was running beautifully and hadn't missed a beat in the 200 miles I've covered.

At about 04:50 this morning I stopped at Lancaster Services and filled the Range Rover with LPG and got a coffee. I left Lancaster and about 11 miles down the road the Range Rover engine cut out. As I was on the inside lane I coasted onto the hard shoulder. When I stopped I saw smoke coming from under the bonnet on the Range Rover. I lifted the bonnet and had a look and the fuse box was on fire.

I ran around the car, got my backpack with the trailer keys in it, unhitched the trailer with one of my Ctiroens on it and pushed it down the hard shoulder to get it away from the Range Rover. I then ran back to the car and managed to get everything out of it before the fire got to the back seats. I was emptying the boot as the front seats were burning.

Never the less what a shame about your P38 but I like the bumper sticker  Travelling around in circles again.

Glad your ok though, sorry to see your FF in flames like that, not nice

But at least you trailer tyres wont of been worn out any more than they need to on the journey

Lucky escape I would say. If the LPG had popped it might have been a different story when you went back to empty the seats. I think the car needs more than t-cut now! Previously..

Glad to see no one was hurt, but sorry to see the demise of your P38.

I'm sorry to have read that my friend... I had a P38 pinched with the keys in 2003... It looked like yours the next time I saw it, placed inside a skip at the recovery agents yard...

You're quite a hero - rushing into a burning car to save....er...luggage.

Glad you're ok - which is all that matters. Horrible to see a burnt out car, especially a Range Rover.

It's a bit annoying as the work that I'd done to that P38 had it as near to perfect as it could be.

It wasn't really luggage I went back to save. The Citroen I was towing down was coming to a specialist to have an engine conversion done on it so there was over 1500 quids worth of car parts in the boot as well as an envelope full of cash to pay them. Glad I got it all before anything went boom though.

Am sitting on eBay FF shopping but can't see anything I fancy at the moment.

If you give us some idea of what your looking for we could spend your money for you, save you all that hassle  If it dont work.......burn it!

for this very unlikely reason, and having witnessed this first hand, (someone else's) I always carry a decent fire extinguisher in the car. around min. 2 litres in size, around £25 they cost so little, and you can normally find 'old' ones at office companies, that have had them date changed. -there is a tiny risk, infintessimal, that it wont work. but its such a simply thing to have as standby, to give you a chance of avoiding a small flicker, spreading. obviously the first picture is way too late to be looking for using it..

all lpg tanks have a safety valve that lets a controlled pressure release of gas, ie it 'melts' and opens, avoiding an explosion.
I assume from the posters story that it didn't 'blow up' ?

which is the typical lpg non-believers theory.

I got stuck in the M6 debacle yesterday as well. Total gridlock.

I can fully understand your motivation to return the the car and save a few things , but you were lucky and you probably wouldn't get away with it another time
Fire extinguishers are a great idea if you catch things VERY early or heaven forbid you needed a couple of seconds protection for some kind of snatch rescue but after the time it takes for the average fire extinguisher to empty lets say 15-20 seconds its time to stand back watch the show from a safe distance with a small tear in your eye and wait for Trumpton to arrive , things can escalate very fast after 30 seconds of fire .
