TD6 ENGINE SWAP

Hi guys,

a friend of mine may have a TDV8 and transmission going spare...

Any suggestions on fitting it to my TD6? I have no idea where to start or what it will need...

Off the top of my head then. At least the following parts are different.
Exhausts
Fuel pumps
Engine bay wiring
Engine ECU
Most engine ancillaries
Engine & gearbox mounts

And then you'll find all the silly stuff like PAS pipes and air-con pipes, possibly only pipework routing but enough to cause headaches.

Could it be done? Technically anything's possible.
Would I attempt it? Doubt it. It's one for the very brave.

In terms of cost, unless you have the donor car complete to pillage for parts then the amount you'd have to buy would make it extremely expensive, prohibitively so. By the time you're done it would end up costing more than a newer TDV8 outright. Just think how easily the regular maintenance can empty your wallet, and then try to imagine how much more such a conversion could end up costing. Scary.

Thought i was in there my friend works for LR R&D and literally was giving it away... but if it's that much work no sodding way :-/

But still get the Engine and box , plenty of TDV8 owners are now finding out what happens when one lunches on its turbo's and there is a good trade in complete engines .Bit mercenary I know but if you are in the position Whistle 2008 MY Supercharged

But especially since yours is an early car (pre-touch screen) and thus is largely a BMW car I really wouldn't fancy it as a job at all. If it was an 05 touch screen car I might have thought differently but TBH I wouldn't bet against having to get all the looms changed over.

See in this thread here what Colin went through when he changed his early BMW based car over to Jag/Ford based infortainment and you'll begin to see what I mean.

Thanks for the advice...

but my TD6 has a gearbox fault so i'll keep that favour to get a new box from him ;-P as i'm sure thats what it needs..

As suggested above, giving it to someone with a petrol FFRR contemporary to the engine and I think it would work better. It would still be a BIG job, but if you already have a blown engine... Whistle
Over here, a diesel FFRR would certainly attract a lot of attention and command quite a premium.
There's quite a number of folk here with older Landys who swap out old Rover V8 engines to switch to 300Tdi (and sometimes 200 Tdi). North America hasn't had a factory installed diesel a Land Rover since the Series III in the mid70s.

And that is the easy bit. Electronically it will not work as LR changed the bus protocols when the engines were changed. So the later ECUs will not communicate with the rest of the vehicle.

Yes, with money you can do anything. For GBP100k to GBP150k we'd build a CAN bus adapter for you.
