Side Step Repairs

Guys

Can anyone advise if they have ever taken original steps with mudflaps off and not had to do paintwork under the mudflap or do they rust where they trap the mud and rain?

My 2004 has had original steps and combined mudflaps fitted from new. The 2 graphite grey strips that run down the sides are broken. I see they sell replacements @ £80 each. New steps are £150!!
Alot of people say the L322 looks better without them, so was wondering about unbolting them this weekend to take a look, but am guessing there is going to be rust under where the mud flap fits? Are they just 2 bolts into the chassis and then unscrew the mudflap?

Cheers

It all depends. It doesnt rust were you mention but sometimes after removing the flaps there will be a line where the mudflap sat against the panel. I reckon theres a good chance of rubbing this line with polish and it should remove most if not all of any evidence. You wont know until you try though as its dependent on how tight the flaps are against panel. Hope that makes sense. Thumbs Up Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Be interested to hear how that goes as I've been toying with the same idea. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

OE and all the aftermarket ones i've seen have the metal plates behind the panel and the flaps screw through that panel into the plate...
i had just mudflaps on mine and they were secured by screws that went in by the wheel arch.. ... - .- -.

Cheers all

Guess it's a case of either buying the 2 strips then £160 or a new set of sidesteps.

Will have a look around and see

Thanks anyway

Oh, and by the way, you have two bolts going up through the horizontal brackets into the chassis and two pairs of two bolts for the vertical hangers that need to be loosened or removed to get each step off.

My mudflaps required the lower plastic panels to be drilled to hold the metal bracket and mudflap together, then replaced on the car, so removing the mudflaps would leave a hole.....which could be filled with body filler i guess and resprayed!

Oh, ffs, have i broken one of the cardinal sins of FF ownership? I'll get me coat Big Cry
