Roof rails and top box or mini trailer??

Right gents I have a top box but my ff has no rails and something is stopping me from snapping bits off to fit rails so for the holiday we need more space so do I buy a trailer or are the roof rails acceptable as don't like to change the lines of the ff welcome thoughts

Sandy, personal opinion having used both, I would go for small trailer, so much easier to load/unload and you take it off at the other end without having to completely empty it first, minor detail also is fuel consumption Thumbs Up

I have the platform, but not the overpriced box.

Works great with a few waterproof holdalls

What about some roof bars rather than roof-rails? The plastic flaps fit inside the feet of my Whispbar roof bars so you don't have to cut them off.

See my post on this thread for more details:

I have gone for a fairly heavy Rhino Rack triple bar system but try looking at the Whisbar track as just mentioned it is far better than the Land Rover track system . 2008 MY Supercharged

I have a trailer but only for massive loads. It's a pain to park, security is an issue and you have to drive very slowly. You also need to store it and maintain it. If you can get by with a roof box or even better a tow hitch box - go for it. Thumbs Up

New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

The Whipsabars look the dogs danglies and much better than the OEM roof rails/bars I had on the 4.2 SC. I would also go that route (unless of course I can convince "the family" that each person only needs a small bag that takes up half the floor space up to 30 cm height of course and hell is getting very cold right then and there).

I'm not a fan of the box on the back, looks fragile to me, definitely not offshore/hufter proof. Parking sensors will probably not work anymore or "see" the box all the time, even then they won't see far enough back etc. Too easy for other drivers to bump into it etc.

The roof box doesn't look great either but at least the MIL will be more comfortable. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Choices!

I've looked at your thread and have to say that there are so many advantages and disadvantages for both luggage setups, it really depends upon where you are going (height restrictions along with roof weight)
Intended speed of travel (Towing limitations and difficulty reversing etc)
What you intend to take with you.

I guess I am fortunate in that I have several choices.
I have the Thule Back-up box, as well as 2 sizes of Thule Roof box.
I also have a 3 bike carrier.

For myself, I prefer to carry luggage bags in the roof box as they are less accessible to wandering mitts!
The back-up box is extremely useful and great for stowing dedicated equipment like Scuba or Kayak gear which leaves the roof box for clothing etc and the cabin for folk.
We were married last year and had the wedding in Scotland. The Rangie was well and truly loaded up with roof box plus 2 mountain bikes on top alongside, plus a further 3 bikes on the carrier behind.
When we returned to Devon, we also had 2 ornate wedding arches up top (without the flowers!)

It's a utility vehicle after all and if I were to do the planned kayaking trip up to Kintyre i would use the back-up box with 3 cycles on top of that (Bespoke additional bracketry) and the kayaks on the roof.

I'm just about to part ex my 2009 registered Vogue SE (2010 Model - digital dash etc) and am selling some of the things you may want below:

I will be listing separately with prices and so on very shortly.

Westfalia Tow Bar.
Westfalia QD Tow Ball.
Westfalia Multi Height mounting plate.
Supercharged side grills.
Roof Rails and crossbars.
Deployable Side Steps (need to be removed).
Full set of RR carpets.
Full size loadspace rubber mat.
Dog Guard

I also have a full Walnut wood trim for the l322 mkii

All the very best and happy travelling
