v3mmtrangerover interesting story for you.
The 1st. L322 I bought was a 2004 4.4 (BMW) petrol. Cut a long story short I bought the car unseen having been told it had an engine problem throwing it into engine fail safe mode. Flew down to Southampton, I'm in Glasgow, paid for the car, sorted the paperwork and went to drive it out the airport car park. After a few hundred yards in went into boing boing mode and up came transmission fail safe mode not engine. As it was a Sunday and it had only 4th and reverse and there were no flight homes I decided to chance my arm. 400+ miles later I got home pretty much incident free at 17.3mpg.
Having done tests I found the input shaft speed sensor was o/c. Phoned the local ZF tranny specialist who had a sensor in stock but assured me, over the phone, it need a box overhaul, the sensor wouldn't cure it. I went with my instincts and no it didn't cure it. To keep this brief I eventually found the fault, it was the sensor and a very cheap terminal spade connector.
I then took it to the car for a transmission hot oil flush. When it was in I told them what I'd found and they told me the following:-
They'd had an Astra in a couple of weeks earlier after 7 garages had tried to fix the fault which was it went into transmission fail safe mode. They eventually fixed it and the fault was they found one of the front indicators had the wrong bulb in it.
I offer this as evidence that we really don't know enough about what can affect the electronics on modern cars. You might well be onto something with your back light. Anything which I assume can change the resistance in any circuit on the car can possibly trip an ecu, even one we consider unrelated. Check everything including the multiple earths. Your meter is your friend!
Good luck. I've always said vibration is the arch enemy of electronics and cars are a great source of vibrations. Please report back what you find. Rehab is for quitters!!!

Not sure if this will help especially as you say the fuel is 'good' but I experienced very similar symptoms to yours some time ago with my own 2007 TDV8. It turned out to be a loose fuel pipe in the tank. One of the lift pipes on the pump under, in my case, the access hatch under the rear seat behind the driver had a loose connection. Every so often it would result in fuel starvation and throw up all the symptoms you describe.
Hope you're able to resolve it soon. 2012 TDV8 Westminster in the New Forest

Shaun, as you know there are twin tanks sat saddle bag style over the prop shaft tunnel. The usual cause is one of the pumps fail and it starts to run out of fuel earlier than expected. Rehab is for quitters!!!

Hi guys. I have posted this in another section of this site but I guess the same problem is scattered everywhere. I will copy and paste as I write it, hope it helps. I will also post the link as it has photo's. ((( Hi Vadim. And everyone else who needs help with this problem. Thanks for getting back so quickly. The reason I asked, was to actually help you and any other poor sole that "like me" Has spent a small fortune on this car trying to fix this unique problem. I followed all the forums and replaced battery, both MAF sensors, both MAP sensors, brake light switch, fuel filter. We took it to a garage last week because it got so bad it would not even start. Garage said turbo has gone but we knew it wasn't. The car was in the same spot as when we left it, it was obvious they didn’t want to get involved. I was convinced it was a single problem causing ~ LOSS OF POWER, ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT ON DASH, SUSPENSION LOWERING AND COMING UP FAULTY, HDC FAULT, TRANSMISSION FAULT, ALL TERRAIN FAULT, PARKING SENSOR FAULT ETC - ETC - ETC. It got so bad, the fault code reader was coming up with all manor of faults, it even said ALL my lights were faulty. ANYWAY, Lads and lasses, I decided to bin the fault code reader and chuck it in the back of the car and go back to basics and with a friends help, physically look and feel our way around the engine so you must first pop off the big plastic cover on top of the engine. And I am glad and pleased to say we found the cause of this problem, and you won’t believe it when I tell you. One tiny wire shorting out, causing ALL these” sort of” unrelated faults happening, because the short was just spiking the whole system. Basically, the short is located in the wiring loom for number 7 and number 8 injectors. The short is precisely on number 7 injector pipe. The location if you’re not sure is when you are facing the front of the car the right side from front to back is bank 5,6,7,8. The cause! There is a big metal cover that covers the injectors and leak off pipes. You must remove this cover, it’s a bit awkward but not hard. Locate number 7 injector pipe and the loom in directly on top, lift it and cut the mesh surrounding the loom and take a very close look ( pics before and after enclosed) My guess is the metal plate put pressure on the loom. The really strange thing is, the injector pipe does have a type of insulator around it, BUT! Only part of it, almost like a zebra crossing. So, the loom was rubbing on the uninsulated part of the pipe. I guess it is really hit and miss where the loom touches. Anyway guys, I hope this helps you. Just one thing though, I found the loom on the other bank was tight too so I stuck a bit of rubber between the big metal plate and the loom, so best to check all the injector wiring. I would just like to thank my mates brother John Ade for finding it, he is the Poirot of finding faults and believe it or not, it only took him just 10 minutes to find it, but there again, he is a genius. Oh! By the way, fault code reader has found not faults 😊 )))) LINK https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=626122#626122
