Any thoughts on this?...

SKY NEWS . COM - Police Officers Smash Pensioner's Car Window

A little over the top considering they had already realised the driver was 70 years of age - don't you think?

(Sorry members - I don't know how to offer a link to this story/video)

Absolutley MICK - a right pair of over zealous pr Censoredcks in my IMHO!

I had thought he was speeding but the pursuit vehicle doesn't register a speed above 42mph!

then I discovered they had stopped him just before the chase, so they knew the gentleman was elderly,
(apparently his misunderstanding but he thought he was being escorted home - not sure if that was just his defence in court - BUT STILL!!!)

Supercop No.1 jumping out of his vehicle and charging towards / smashing his stick against RR window was bad enough... but why Supercop No.2 thought it would be necessary for him to jump on the bonnet and then to kick the windscreen - beggars belief!

I am disgusted Evil or Very Mad

Right, as with everything in life, there are two sides to every story. What the media throw out on a regular basis, is what the public want to see. The Daily Wail are the worst offenders when it comes to police bashing, which is why I don't read it (or any other rag to be honest).

Anyway
This started as a routine traffic stop for a seatbelt. Look at the vehicle. Tinted windows, illegal number plate- If I'd come up behind that, I would have expected someone much younger behind the wheel and would have been a little surprised to see an elderly gentleman driving it. I would pull it for the plates and a bit of advice to get it changed. I'm guessing from the outcome of the court case, his front windows were tinted as well given that he got done for it. I digress...

The driver of the RR was then spoken to about not wearing a seatbelt. Mindful this is a traffic car thats stopped him (on board camera is a clue) they are much less lenient than regular police and 9 times out of 10 will issue a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. However, they are still human Laughing and words of advice generally do the trick if the driver is of a similar nature. Your attitude affects my attitude, which affects your attitute and so on.

The claim is then that the driver became abusive to officers. I can believe that. I'm 43 and I am constantly surprised by the attitude of some of the elderly and their outbursts towards me, like "I pay your wages" and Censored like that. However, some officers have a lower tolerance level than others, which is to a certain extent human nature.

At this point then, a ticket is inevitable.

The "OAP" then drove off stating he thought he'd been dealt with (yeah right- how long have you been driving? Never been stopped before in your life?). When he drove off, he knocked a bobby over. He claims the car lurched forward. Isn't he contradicting himself there? Did he lurch forward or did he think he'd been dealt with? Hmmm.

He then claims he thought he was getting a police escort home! Watch the video. Some one who thinks that a police car with the sirens blasting following you is giving you an escort home should not be driving as they really do not seem to have the mental capacity for it.

After an 8 mile 'pursuit', he was only stopped when his tyres deflated due to stinger being deployed.

What happens then is standard procedure for a fail to stop, in that officers will disorientate the driver and prevent him doing more damage, by smashing the drivers window. The officer that jumped on the bonnet was kicking the windscreen. This is done when a driver is violent, so we've yet to find out what the driver said or did to the officer before he drove off. My money is that some proper threat was made.

What if this "OAP" had a gun down the side of his seat? It looks OTT, but that guy could have been another Derrick Bird or Raoul Moat. Appearances can be deceiving.

Some of the old East London gangsters are around his age now- I wouldn't mess with em!

When all is said and done, he lurched forward knocking over an officer and then drove off and didn't stop even though they were using the sirens and lights. Their response seems quite reasonably to me, although to the armchair critics, it always looks OTT. If this was a young person you lot would all be saying throw the book at him. Don't be hypocrites. Age is irrelevant.

A Pursuit can be 2 miles an hour. The definition of a pursuit is to follow someone. This doesn't mean it has to be at speed! Fail to stop for police is an offence, doesn't matter if its crawling along the road. When police tell you to stop, you stop!

I think there is more to this than meets the eye. I'm not taking sides as I wasn't there, neither was anyone else here ( I hope) so none us us, me included, can say for sure what happened.

As an aside- if the officer had hit the window in the right place, it would have broke 1st time! Thumbs Up

Finally - could this be the same gentleman? Same age (64 in 2004, 70 now) from Usk.

Absolutely. I've never had to use anything other than my wit and polite conversation to win over members of the public, no matter how hostile they start out. However, I'm guessing this gentleman continued his rant at police using the "I'm old" card. For all we know, he might be a master criminal at the head of a major car-ringing operation! Like I said- Appearances can be deceiving. The local police would have intel on this male as well and I wouldn't mind betting that when they did a PNC check, the results definately weren't "No Trace of person".

i think different attitudes go with different age groups ..i'm 53 and i do have respect for the police probably because i was brought up that way..thats the way it was in my youth days...now youngsters blatantly shout at police in public so the police have to deal with this kind of abuse in a different way...

I used to cross the road when I saw a copper when I was a lad. frightened to death of em!

When I was a lad, I daren't go out on a cycle at night without lights like they do now. I've been stopped and made to push the bike home, with the cops following me in their Allegro!

I left school in 84, & promptly bought a Yamaha FS1E. Like all good teenagers, I used to cut the L plates down to a more reasonable size. I couldn't go anywhere without being stopped! In all, I got done twice for failing to display L plates - just for cutting them down on the 1st stop and not having one on the front on the 2nd! I also got poked in the eye by a motorcycle cop for "backchatting". Imagine that now!

To say the motorist is persecuted these days, I don't agree with. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded
