There must be some horse owners on here that can give me some good advise please.

What clippers do you recommend?

Key points for me are quietness, reliability and weight / size. Cost is a secondary importance.

I use oster there the mutts nuts around £200 to £300, I've got mains and rechargeable and both superb over the last 5 years

If just clipping one horse use Wolseley lark. For more heavy duty use Wolseley hunter range. For cordless clippers the Lister Liberty are very good. I get mine from www.Wessex animal health.co.UK - free next day delivery if in stock.

It depends if you're just doing a horse a year and if you're doing Hunter clips or full body and legs really. I have bought every make under the sun cordless and mains over the Years and find the only durable ones are heiniger and liveryman ones. But they're noisy . Human type ones (oster, Wahl etc) are quiet but not up to hard repeated use and dirty hairy legs.
Generally these days I buy medium priced adjuatables and reoace them once they are a bit knackered but get blades sharpened a lot. Tend to buy about 20 sets a year but still cheaper than a few sets of very expensive clippers.

The FFRR has 300 of them, but they don't need clipping.
On the other hand, I sudoect a number of them have escaped from the old Disco and are roaming free.

Top tip, Don't wear a fleece! Gets covered in hairs!

Thanks for all the replies chaps - although I believe the chainsaw option may be a tad messy!!

I'm torn between the Wolsely range and the Heiniger (xperience).

We have three animals that will get the treatment - daughters pony, wife's cob and my IDx. The pony and my IDx are both quite young (IDx is 5yrs) so something quiet would be nice - kind of silent but powerful (just like an FFRR).

Is the mask really necessary - I'm not sure I can get one to fit the IDx

We have tried a few and settled a while back on Wolseley. Different sizes and volumes available depending on clipping frequency etc. Also noise as you say is important, especially on the youngsters, but then who did like getting their hair cut as a child
