Transmission fail-safe prog - 2 modes?

I seem to have two versions of the trans. failsafe prog on my L322 4.4

method one, after a few yards, drops the car into 4th gear and that's it! Makes pulling away "interesting" but it's 4th or nothing!

method 2, the car behaves "normally" in automatic mode (not sports or manual) but will not go into 5th.

Can't work our what causes each one. Method 2 *seems* to occur if I've been crawling in town traffic at about 10-12 mph and then eventually get above 30. I think this is pure coincidence though!

Has anyone experience of these two modes? Tym

If it sticks, force it. If it breaks, it needs replacing anyway.
