Very qualified sentence that. Not what I was really talking about.

That clip has a bit of an issue IMO though.

The 4x4 is sending most of the grunt to the back tyres and making the situation worse...

However i am now a winter tyre runner on my main car (goodyear ultragrip Cool because they were so dam cheap for a set during the summer (£120) but because the weather can quickly turn to Censored and when your on the motorway and it starts turning into a pool in the outside two lanes you want tyres that can cut through the water as best as possible and summers just cant do that.

I have a car that has summer tyres fitted but then it is a summer car and so far hasn't been on the road since september because i would rather not let it rot away anymore than it needs to Very Happy

The FF has Pirelli ATR at the front and scorps at the rear and has done well in the snow before, better than it did on MTR's i must add. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.

IMO it's not just about the tyres you've got on your vehicle, but how you have been taught to drive it and how good you can handle it in adverse conditions, not just snow and ice but also waterlogged roads, bad visibility, nighttime driving, etc.

I have had a lot of different driving training over the years, ever since I was 17 years old. When I passed my test (at 17), I thought I was king of the road (as we all do) but knew that I didn't have anywhere near the level of skills to be a good driver.
I was fortunate that a guy I knew was an advanced driving instructor and a fully qualified rally driver, so I got him to teach me how to drive PROPERLY, advanced techniques and rally handling (bleeding scary that, but well worth it!). Made me realise that the majority of road users haven't got a clue what to do in a vehicle unless they're driving in perfect conditions.

If we had the weather to justify it, I would have a separate set of wheels with winter tyres as standard, however I can use my FF with standard M+S tyres all year round....SAFELY!

That's what can make 4x4's on summer tyres dangerous. They do get going.

What's dangerous is that people think that if you can get going easily in snow and ice, regardless of what vehicle you're in and what tyres you're driving on, that you can drive around and stop just as easily.

It's a fact that during winter and bad weather (snow, etc.) more 4x4's are crashed, due to the fact that the majority of owners haven't been taught 'HOW TO DRIVE IN THOSE CONDITIONS'! They think they can drive anywhere, any which way, 'cos they've got a 4x4'. This just isn't the case unfortunately, which some people only discover when they've landed in a ditch or worse. I've done a couple of off-road courses and have learnt even more about handling these vehicles than I already knew.

A couple of years ago, when we had the really wet summer, I went to a local country show where all the vehicles had to park in fields. By mid afternoon the 'car park' was a quagmire.....and the funniest thing was the amount of 4x4's that got bogged down. The 4x4 owners were trying to 'gun' their motors, thinking 'my four wheel drive' will get me out of this mud no problem'. I was pi Censored ing myself with laughter watching some of those wallies sinking deeper and deeper, then the smugness set in when I pottered past them and out onto the road!!

Knowledge is king! Thumbs Up

@CSK, that was what was the funniest thing though, the majority of those wallies that got stuck had full AT tyres on their vehicles, whereas I had standard road tyres (Hankook Ventus ST's) on the Fattie and 'cos I knew what I was doing, I sailed past them.

Just as an aside, my rally driving guy once took me out for a blast up one of the Kielder Forest rally tracks in a road car, with road tyres, to show me what an experienced driver can do. Scary as hell when you are doing a rally stage, at full rally speeds, knowing it is the skill and ability of the driver that is the only thing stopping you from plummeting off a steep drop or flying through the trees!! Shocked

Anyone gunning their tyres in mud is going to get no where no matter what tyres they've got on. I thought only Homer Simpson did that?

Driver was following instructions to keep a cool head when road conditions were dangerous so he put the hood down. Smile
