Hope this assists you Mark/ others and if not, I'll don my tin hat!

Mark,

Your car is a 55 plate which might tend to suggest that it is, as per your profile, a 2006MY.

According to my reading, the first L322 to use the Electronic Torque Managed (ETM) Rear Differential was the 2007MY 4.2 Supercharged Range Rover (Source Wikipedia):
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_Rover_(L322)

If all of that is correct, it appears that your particular year of 4.4 petrol (whether the 5Spd BMW or 6Spd Jaguar engine) was not fitted with the ETM/ Electronic Rear Diff.

As you say, when you provide Duckworth's Parts Dept your chassis number, you will get the definitive confirmation to help you order the correct amount and specification of oil.

ETM Rear Diff drain & refill plugs need sealant washers?

Hi,

In the previously posted 4.2SC workshop manual extract about draining and refilling the ETM Rear Diff oil, it shows that the drain and fill plugs should simply be cleaned after removal and before being re torqued.

However, when, for example, you look at the drain and refill procedure for a 2003, 4.4 engined vehicle with non electronic Rear Diff, the workshop manual specifically advises to discard and then replace the "sealing washer" on the drain and refill plugs:
http://workshop-manuals.com/landrover/rang...nd_refill/

** Before I start this job on the 4.2SC Electronic Rear Diff, aside to simply cleaning the drain and refill plugs, is there any washer or sealant that I should be replacing or applying before re-torque of the plugs please?

Thanks

Thumbs Up

I would make sure you can break them loose first. Think I'm going to order a new fill plug as it looks like it's going to be a pain to remove. So be safer just ordering a new on incase this one gets damaged in the process of removing it Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

Thanks Stan and it's fair consideration Mark (to me at least). In fact, I've just had a telecon with Dan at Duckworths asking whether people tend to buy new drain and fill plugs and/ or whether for the ETM Rear Diff, there are seals to buy, all just in case. His experience is no, people, tend to just buy the Diff Oil.

On that basis, I'll just proceed as suggested on this thread which seems to be to use a lubricant on the Hex nuts in the hours/ days before doing the job and as the Hex sockets I've got are 1/2", hopefully I will get access with my recently acquired Breaker bar and all will be well.

I'll first do a dummy run with the filler plug to determine if I can free it or not and if I can't, I'll order 2 new plugs (dummy run... How apt Mr. Green

Thumbs Up

Just got off the phone with Mackie's, who seem to have a good reputation for all things transmission.

They've quoted £275+VAT for a gearbox oil change but when I asked about the transfer box, they said that was sealed for life and they didn't do them? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

When i called mackies i asked them if they could do the diffs aswell while the car was in and they didn't seem to keen they just said yeah well we can do them but can't give you an exact price on it because it depends the amount of old oil we manage to get out the diff, so we don't know how much new oil we will need to replace with ??? .

I think they just like sticking to transmissions by the sound of it. Best bet is to order the correct oils from dan and do the diffs and transfer box yourself, that way you know the jobs done right with the correct oil and quantity. Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

That was the impression I go too, Mark.

To be honest, I really haven't got the time (nor the inclination) to DIY, so I'd rather just get it done by others more experienced in such things. I would hate to end up with oil all over my drive, and then have the hassle of disposing of the old oils. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

at first i wanted to just put it in and get it taken care of but that was easier said than done most places seemed clueless regarding the correct oil types and quantities, got a couple of worryingly cheap quotes which i now know after ordering the oil wouldn't even have covered the cost of the oil never mind labour charges. Thats why i resorted to doing it myself but once you get underneath and have a look you see that there is not much to it. Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

I always keep old oil containers and and drain the old oil in there the just take it to local dump and pour it in the oil disposal tank, then keep hold of your old containers for next time Thumbs Up

one of these makes bottling up the old oil very easy Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )
