Ive done quite a few like yours, then 1 month later (panicking owner) then 30K later and on every occasion the waste oil comes out clean both 1 month & 30K later...

Usually when things have gone wrong with the bearings there is a noticeable din in the car from the rear... (like an old 70's school bus)

Thanks Craig, no din coming from ours and hopefully this oil change will ensure the wheels on this bus go round and round for a long time to come!

Thumbs Up

Job done Thumbs Up , front diff and transfer box oil was very clean and the rear was as expected dark brown but didn't appear to be much debris in it. Think i might change the oil in the rear within the next 5k miles just to make sure the brown is well flushed out, after all its only £20 for another litre. Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

Question for those concerned that dirty coloured rear diff oil might indicate rust or longer term problems:
After a month or two on the new oil, could the car not just be taken a 15 minute drive before then

A. Udoing the filler plug, drain off a few hundred ml/ getting it all over your arms, then check the colour/ clarity of the drain amount and if it looks the same colour/ clarity as it did a month earlier, just refill with the extracted amount? (or)

B. As suggested by Markcaughey: undo the filler plug and draw off a sample with an oil syringe?

I wouldn't bother - you've changed the oil, it will be fine.......at the age of your FFRR I wouldn't have expected the oil to come out like brand new, sounds pretty normal to me. Stolen / Gone: 2006MY Supercharged LPG Autobiography - Zambezi Silver with Sand/Jet/Jet Oxford Leather.....

Is it the same procedure on a TD6? My car had a major service just before I purchased it is this normally done on a big service?

Doing mine today so after a long search found that in Western Australia no one will stock Castrol BOT 720 apart from LR so I go down to the only dealer in the state , $100 Shocked and they have just one litre Evil or Very Mad but I have literally no choice and after some searching we find that Jaguar use it in their final drives as well , Jaguar labeled BOT 720 is $171 Shocked Shocked
So that will put some perspective on it when you next feel like you main dealer in the UK is ripping you off a bit .

edit

All done now , nice easy job with a bit of heat around the filler plug and out it came , oil was quite glittery but not a bad colour and after I finished I checked with the IID and I only have 57% clutch left so I might have to stop wanging it out of 90 degree junctions Embarassed and for the drain plug it is a 3/8 socket drive not 8mm .

Axel, what do you mean by this please ?

"I finished I checked with the IID and I only have 57% clutch left", and where do you check this with the IID tool?

Put you IID tool to live values and scroll to RDTC Rear Diff and scroll down , it's actually clutch travel left not wear so in fact it might mean something slightly different . 2008 MY Supercharged

Might be worth a mention ......

How many times have you heard someone say - their DIFFS packed up !!! - lost oil or over filled them and they have burst their oil seals - its more common than you think !

When ever I change our Diff Oils I always purchase a new LR DRAIN & FILLER PLUGS - they only cost about £3 each

Reasons why
1. Brand new sealing compound on threads - so you will not get leaks - just ensure you torque to correct settings
FRONT DIFF FILLER plug 34Nm / FRONT DIFF DRAIN plug 54Nm
REAR DIFF FILLER plug 34Nm / REAR DIFF DRAIN plug 54Nm

2. The Hex Heads are NEW - no rust or Censored on the plugs - Keep things new & service at a high standard Thumbs Up
