2009 Range Rover Autobiography 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue

Colour coding bits

A few weeks ago I decided to get some parts of the Rangie colour coded at our local friendly body shop, as I'd scratched the offside lower plastic trim panel on the driver's door, so it needed removing for attention anyway. My FF is Stornaway Grey, and the side vents, grille surround and bonnet vent are Brunel, which is close in colour but not a match. The mirror covers were looking tired as well. These plastic parts were starting to get a patchy finish and they stood out every time I washed the car:

I removed the front grille, wing mirror covers, bonnet vent and side vents and set them aside. I also removed the lower plastic trim below the side vents, for access to the door trim, to reveal this:

The steel brackets that hold on the mudflaps were badly corroded, with some superficial corrosion present beneath them on the aluminium structure:

So I removed them on both sides, cleaned up the corrosion, replaced them with new items and reassembled using Duralac jointing compound to hopefully slow the galvanic corrosion - the brackets are steel and the base structure is aluminium:

And then gave everything a good coat of ACF50 to further slow future corrosion:

The paint shop did a great job with the trim parts, they had a nice finish. The wing mirror covers took quite a bit of primer/filler to smooth out before painting:

Then it was just a case of reassembling everything on the car. The photos don't really show the difference, but in the flesh it's much smarter than the mottled plastic finish they used to have. It would more dramatic on a non-grey car, there was a red FF on the forum a while ago with colour-coded bits and that also looked great. I will probably do the door handles next as they're looking a little tired too.

Nice and tidy then

you'll find it is much cheaper to use PowerfulUK's stick on handle covers than to get the handles off for paint. To paint them properly you'd need to get them off after taking the interior trim off (X4 doors).

If anyone want to do the same, bear in mind you could also use stick-on covers for the mirror that may be less expensive than bring your to the bodyshop - if you do not get anything else painted of course.

Do the handle covers feel ok in use though?

Mine has come with tatty handles, but another set of handles to fit.

Have a black set on mine and they are fine, ok if you feel for it here is a lip, but day to day they are ok. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

before seeing the covers fitted I really did not want to hear about them and got my previous L322's handle repainted, then on the following one i did get the cover and they do work fine and last longer than original handles...

just be careful to line both parts of the handle when fitting them and that they are properly painted smooth on each side before fitting. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l
