Apologies in advance for my lack of knowledge when it comes to vehicles, I just get in and drive and give little thought to all of the moving parts and general mechanics
I have had a few spots of clear oil, certainly not black as it recently had a service in December last year by a local independent Land Rover specialist. Sometimes, I can smell a faint bonfire type smell for a few seconds after a journey (yes it seems to be coming from the engine area but I can't narrow it down). This is intermittent so not all the time.
I've lifted the bonnet and I can't see any fresh oil, there is a fair bit of what looks like old black cruddy oil around one of the sides but when I touch it it's almost dry so I figure it must have been an old leak of some kind.
I lay underneath the car when I got back home from work this evening and took a picture of this, so I am lying on the front passenger side more or less near the front of the door by front mud guards. I have circled a black plastic plug, is this the sump plug? When I touch the bottom and around that plug I get a clear oil on my fingers.
My local independent is fully booked for 2 weeks so I have it booked in on 26th and the main Land Rover dealer wanted £110 + VAT per hour to diagnose, minimum 2 hours work apparently to find the cause then parts and more labour on top of that. Needless to say, I am trying to do as much as I can before taking it in
