Viscous Fan

Hi Guys,

We'll I'm experiencing the wooosh of the viscous fan and I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction. As you can see from the attached photo, the washer between the nut and the fan unit is loose!

http://www.fullfatrr.com/gallery/albums/us...an%202.jpg

The fan itself only turns slightly when pushed by hand so I'm assuming it hasn't lost its fluid. However, I'm presuming it shouldn't be like that Shocked

Is there a way of fixing this or is this my first 'outlay' Sad

regards to all.

Rare for it to work loose as it spins in the direction of tightening, if you understand my meaning.

You will need a couple of vicious fan spanners to tighten it up, a right pain to do with the guard in place (the one's from Halfords are about 6" too short). You should be able to spin it up by hand if the fan is solid to the nut, remember it has an anti-clockwise /left handthread on it so to tighten: "undo".

If it has to come out then you will need to remove the fan shroud. But you have to release the fan first to remove the shroud!

Shame its not a TD6, you could just remove the fan and be done with it! .

Cheers Joe90,

Yes, I understand that! (I'm just relieved that I worked out the image linking at the moment!)

I do know that the car had a new radiator before I bought it so it may just well be that someone forgot to tighten a nut (or two).

thanks again.

regards

I think when you get it off, you will find it has 'in and out' play.
Normally, two things can go wrong, either they run slow and 'slip' therefore don't give adequate cooling, (when warm) or they spin 'locked up', and 'woosh' this should not happen after about a minute of cold start. if it does, it can lead to the fan spinning too fast, and breaking up, destroying the rad, cowl, and bonnet.
Mine went 'loose' I bought an aftermarket new one around £70 on ebay. (2002 vCool you can get them secondhand for half that, to prove it. but buy it from a breaking company, that way, it has a 'guarantee'

Cheers for that information Jon Boy.

I'll try and keep the bonnet in the style that LR intended!

John

People have run without one on the TD6 for years without problems. they run so cool, took mine off my V8 and put electric fans on it and they only come on if sat in heavy traffic... you have to make sure the rest of the cooling system is tip top though.... Pete

Yep, been without for a couple of years now (new stat, egr stat, rad, condenser, electric fans work)

On a hot day in traffic I hear the air con fans come on but temp gauge always steady at 12 o'clock. .
