^Just guessing:
1 It already has plenty of torque, so works fine with six gears.
2 Yes, two more gears would help with fuel economy, but customers that cared about that probably bought the diesel.
I'm not saying I agree, but that might be the reasoning.

I wonder if the 8-speed required too much work to handle the extra power. Obviously, they could have done it if they wanted.

I would agree if they didn't put the 8sp in the 5.0 405 a year or so later

Did they make any changes to the transmission? Or does the significant diet the L405 went on allow me to save face here?

I'm sure they just released the 405 with the 8sp from its inception

Maybe someone didn't get the memo in the 322 design room and the 8sp is soooooo much better then the 6sp!
